What Is The Mk1 Auris Hybrid Like?

Well

Been here a few weeks now and initial search for a Mk2 Yaris 1.33 Petrol Manual went cold...

Then discovered the MultiDrive auto is trouble free (compared to MMT) and had better MPG and tax and similar performance as the manual - so a search was on!

Then search got diverted to the CVT hybrid....but newer Mk3 Yaris Hybrid is not cheap!

(Budget £7k)

So, now looking at the mk1 Auris hybrid (preferably 2010 onwards)...

With a bigger engine (1.8 130bhp vs Yaris 1.5 100bhp) - how does the Auris compared to the Yaris?

Comments MOST welcome!

What spec? In terms of drive they are very similar. Auris has more power, but similar acceleration and top speed (electronically limited to protect the system).

Auris is bigger.

AFAIK 2010 Auris is Gen 2 hybrid tech.

Obviously prefer TOP T-Spirit with Navigation Pack - but looks like those are rare :(

What is downside of Gen 2 tech?

mileage seems to be 40-60k - will that still be trouble free for many years to come?

Battery is 8 years 100k warranty isnt it?

I am thinking of adding a BOGOF Toyota Warranty at £540 from dealers

And I think they come with space saver spare (and not repair kit)?

I'm not sure of the details with older Auris, but if the Prius is anything to go by, assuming it was looked after and is in good condition, there is no reason to think it should be any worse.

The Auris Hybrid was first introduced in 2010, so the oldest will be 2010.

Battery warranty is 8 years/100,000 miles - and with the annual Hybrid Health Check can be extended up to 11 years.

One thing to note is that the boot is shallower than the petrol/diesel Auris, due to the Battery being beneath the boot floor.

Yes, there is a spacesaver spare. As above, if you have a specific item you wish to carry in the boot, check it will fit - the back-of-seat to lid dimension is limited, although the overall volume is passable. The "fly-buttress" centre console is a bit gimmicky, and the oddments tray beneath it is only useful if you have very long arms. Preferred the cup holders on the Mk 1 (kept drinks cooler, being in front of the a/c vents!). The middle spec. with TomTom TNS 410 unit is a bit elementary, but works OK; and updates are reasonably priced.

There is a middle spec? Is that the T4?

Is the TomTom same as the Yaris Mk2 one?

But they look different don't they?

What is downside of Gen 2 tech?

The original Auris HSD uses gen3 Prius tech - ie 1.8 engine etc. In fact it is pretty much almost identical to the Prius tech. That is a good thing. The only downsides to the original Auris HSD is the small boot due to the batteries and the gear shift is set up for LHD, and it's a bit smaller inside.

You can find them cheaply but not because there's anything wrong as such, it was just not the best looking car in the world - though of course beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

If an early Auris HSD ticks your boxes and is within budget, then get one. BUT do make sure it has a full service history - preferably Toyota and that 0w20 oil was used as this gives best economy. Also, if you get one and it wasn't last serviced by Toyota get a Hybrid Health Check done. It will give you extra peace of mind. It costs about £40 or is included in a Toyota dealer service. Well worthwhile.

Wayne - where about in Yorkshire are you? I'm based near M1 J31

I've got a 2010 Auris Hybrid T-Spirit with Sat Nav - happy for you to come and look at mine if you want to see what they are like. I've had it for 4 years

Thanks :)

Sadly having sold my car a fortnight ago - and hoping prices come down for mk3 Yaris s, didn't really happened :crybaby:

So now car-less, and I am 55 miles away from u - but thanks for the offer

PS:

Is your maps easy / cheap to update?

I've got the DVD based SatNav system (model: B9030), not the more recent Touch and Go system. I prefer the DVD based system - it is what I am used to, having had it on about 5 different cars now!

The update is easy - just swap the disc, but it can be quite expensive. I usually get the discs from eBay for around £80 each, but I have bought them direct from Toyota in the past via the map updates.eu site for around £140

It's setup for LHD vehicles, IE back to front for our market.

I liked mine a lot and have just traded it in with 42K on the clock. Never let me down and the ride is higher than the new model. Bigger rear window too. Sorry to see it go but the 5 year warranty was up so made sense to renew.

Cheers bud for input :)

So why trade in when warranty out - not reliable?

Bogof warranty from Toyota now at £516!

Good question. Was aware of the Bogoff and considered carefully. Deciding factor was good trade-in deal amounting to near 8K towards a new one + could transfer my service agreement across just before old one was needed to be serviced. And I fanced satnav, auto folding wing mirrors, dual air con, digital radio etc so took the plunge. However, old model has better visibility and didn't let me down.

Cool

Was thinking I could have bought your old mk1 - as I pick up mine tomorrow :)

But yours not a t-spirit then :(

Yes it is / was but not with satnav as it was an optional extra. Good car though, treated with loving care by Yours Truly. Presume the dealer will sell it after a makeover.

Only sat nav missing?

Keyless entry? Though looking at what Frosty posted (ref theft from keyless entry cars) not such a good idea now ...

Glass roof?

Tinted rear windows

17" alloys

Rear camera (front rear parking sensors)?

Rain sensor?

Heated seats?
