Hi all,

Greetings to all. I am looking to buy a 1999 Corolla 1.6 SR or the 1.6vvti sr. Does any of you drive either model here? how do you rate the car? any experience to share? What do I need to watch out for?

Any opinion/ experience appreciated...Thank you in advance!

Regards,

Tammy

i have the 98 model sr and i have to say its brilliant. good acceleration in all gears due to short gearing, comfortable seats (nice colour and design) and all round good cars.

the only downsides are that the dash is a bit plain and it could do with being lowered a bit to improve the handling, which as standard is a tiny bit soft

hope this helps and u go on to buy one

What an excellent choice, i have both the 1.3 G6 and the 1.6 VVTI SR and i dont mind driving either. O.K. the 1.6 is mine while her indoors is the other. It was only after buying hers that i liked it so much that i gave up my avensis for the 1.6.

Hope you find a good one, i'm positive you will be as pleased as punch with it. I found the 1.3 1999 with 33k and the 1.6 2000 with 18k, both with service history.

cheers Herbie.

I drive a 00 1.6 SR and its a great car! I agree with corollasr that it could do with being a bit lower to suit my driving style but apart from that, its a GREAT car!! Go for it!!

I drive a 98 sr. It's a very good car and I'm pleased with it, especially now I've lowered it 30mm. It's very reliable (as you'd expect from a toyota with 35,000 and fsh) and doesn't use a drop of oil. On the downside I'm not a fan of the red flick effect on the interior trim and some of the plastics are not that amazing in the interior. Also, the 5th gear is quite short so motorway economy is not the greatest if you drive at 70mph +. I'm being picky though. The gear change in the car is a revelation though, absolutely superb!

One more thing, if you're looking to tune your Corolla for more power then I think you should avoid the VVti model. From what I've read they're very difficult/expensive to increase bhp. The 98sr is better (125-129bhp with a chip, induction kit and exhaust) and there's always engine conversions, just ask knowlson or ae111sr! Hope this helps, if at all.

Another point is that the vvti version is in the facelifted Shell. The main difference being the front headlights and bumper. It can be VERY hard finding parts for it too!! Trust me!!

But just means there are less of us with the facelifted version!! :D

Thanks very much for all the comments. I should have replied earlier, but couldnt find the time!

Anyway, I bought myself a 99 T reg silver Corolla 1.6 SR yesterday! I find the power from the 1.6 more than enough for me really, I would have liked a taller 5th gear on the motorways, but since the car mainly does local trips, it's geart!!

It feels better built even compared to a 2001 Honda Accord...amazing!

Thanks again, and it's great to see there's other SR drivers here too.

Im not sure but I dont think it will be as the facelift occured in 2000 on a W plate, mine is the vvti. I might be wrong though!!

Welcome to the club buddy

Good choice in car mate! The main thing you get different apart fromt he vvti engine in the later sr is the 6 speed box. But build handling etc are the same. The one you have gone for though does lend its self to mods better. So all the best and have fun :D

Hi,

I've just bought a W reg Corolla SR, and I'm really happy with it. The only problem I find is that the car is quite bouncy. I mean not excessively bouncy but when going over bumps, the car bounces longer than I expect it to. Does anybody have the same problem? It could be my shocks are weak or maybe the drivers seat is bouncy........

Hello Sims, Welcome to TOC. I have the 98 SR and found that the springs needed uprating and lowering much better ride altogether.

cheers John....

Does this mean, you had this problem of bouncing up and down too much?

Because I was thinkng of taking the car to toyota and ask them to test it out.

Yeah, hehe, brilliant car, only diff to mine is the gearbox/kit bits.

One of the best VFM cars you can buy in my opinion.

But I would say that :D

Just remember not to get too friendly with another rolla in front and make sure that bonnet catch if firmly secure!:lol::lol:

Though the fresh paint on the front does look good my friend

I've had no problems with mine but then I changed the standard springs to Eibach ones when it was just six months old. It depends to some extent on the mileage the car has done - the more miles the more tired the springs and shocks get. I've still got the original shocks on the back with the Eibach springs though they are due to be changed sometime for uprated units.
