I took a chance and installed a USB/Bluetooth adapter, which was not listed for my car or audio system - W53828. This cost £52.50 free post. post-76861-0-04846300-1442511323_thumb.j

After receiving my trim tools from eBay post-76861-0-15608900-1442511654_thumb.j the work began.

I found a guide on the net on how to remove the trim to get to the rear of the stereo.

First was the top vent post-76861-0-49397800-1442511389_thumb.j then the passenger side trim near the heater controls.

post-76861-0-79730200-1442511471_thumb.jpost-76861-0-27207800-1442511499_thumb.jpost-76861-0-00728200-1442511570_thumb.jpost-76861-0-46004300-1442511367_thumb.j

After removing the stereo, the CD changer port was empty so I plug the adapter cable in.

A quick test with one of my USB memory sticks, and all was fine. I tested another with no issues.

I put the unit in the glove box and ran the mic cable from the roof lining. post-76861-0-69990500-1442511689_thumb.jpost-76861-0-98057000-1442511703_thumb.j

Like any other unit, the display only shows folder, track number time played. No artist or title details like the MP3 CD.

Not tested the bluetooth function yet, but paired one of my 2 phones, so both phones are handsfree.

Sound quality is very good and I can change tracks.

Very pleased.

PS: This unit does not support Apple stuff through the USB cable. Only via bluetooth!

bluetooth playback using my Samsung Galaxy S3, works well with full control of track changing. iPhone/iPod should work the same.

Regarding the the USB/Bluetooth adapter. I have installed the other brands - Connects2 iconnect for my mk1 which has the Sony cd player and cd changer, and the Xcarlink, which I fitted to my brothers Renault Grand Scenic (2 litre Nissan diesel).

The one I fitted is called LaPower from eBay - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/111575425984?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

There is a version without bluetooth - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Car-Stereo-USB-SD-AUX-MP3-CD-changer-adapter-Toyota-Avensis-Mark-X-2004-2009-/121474710036?hash=item1c4874fa14

Yatour have one at a similar cost, but the delivery times are longer as they come from abroad. WIth the current Xcarlink and Connects2 they cost more and by the time you add the bluetooth, the costs more than double.

With my brothers Xcarlink, it cannot play the memory sticks I play in my cars! The folders are correct and the contents are MP3 with various compression, depending on the source. I try to use the highest possible. The other is that the bluetooth module for the Xcarlink costs more than the LAPower Adapter on it's own, and the quality is not great either for phone calls. I have not test the LaPower phone quality, but the steering controls track up and down work the answer and reject functions. A very neat solution.

Now for the only minor negative that may put off some, the unit take microSD. They are cheap and common so should be no issues.

The maximum capacity for memory card/stick is 32GB.

I know that Toyota have now included USB on recent cars, but the earlier AUX socket is okay for some, not me. I prefer integration with control.

I have updated my "How to add a USB/Bluetooth adapter" http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/tutorials/article/50-how-to-add-usb-adapter-to-avensis-t27-with-w53828-cd-stereo/

I did not like the glovebox location so got a dashboard extension cable and fitted it in a blank near the steering wheel, just above the handbrake control. The adapter itself was tucked behind the panelling near the heater controls. I though of other places and finally decided to place USB/AUX socket in place of the original AUX socket, like the later Avensis.

I also have pictures of the trim removed. It is very easy.

Update!

The adapter bluetooth allows calls to be taken, no matter which source is in use. That means I both my phones are available to be answered (though not at the same time). I was listening to the radio when a call came in through the adapters bluetooth. That was the final test, because I thought stereo had to be in adapter/USB mode to receive calls. The system simply switches.

Even though the car already had bluetooth, it was limited to one phone, and handle calls only. Not music playback!

The Bluetooth/USB adapter works perfectly and is like the official Toyota USB upgrade, and the later USB/Bluetooth fitted to later cars.

Very much recommended.

Great guide Konrad and many thanks for your response I ended up going for a Grom audio (usb3) which is nearly double to price but I need it to use on IPod,IPhone and android which this covers.

That's great Anthony.

I forgot about the iPod support. Why does anything to do with iPod cost so much? Must be the legal stuff.

This unit does not support iPod/iPhone music playback via USB! bluetooth music playback work well with my old Samsung.

Still, I love incar integration.

Hi Konrad

Thank you for all the information that you have provided. I have the B9010 unit and I have followed your guide fully, and purchased the same adaptor and installed it.

I have 2 issues which I hope you could give some advice on..

1) Via bluetooth all car Speakers work fine, but the quality is poor (both music and calls) and I therefore prefer the aux option - however, anything played via the aux the audio is only played from the right Speakers of the car. I have tried everything, and there is no way that the sound will come out from any other Speakers.

2) All of a sudden (after few minutes of playing anything via aux or bluetooth) the CD changer screen will disapear, and it will no longer work. pressing the DISC button (to change it from CD to the CD changer) stops working. So there is no way to get it back to accessing the adaptor. I have no clue why this happens.

Usually a call will last 20 seconds and then the the audio system will just turn off (as it cannot access the cd changer option). The only way to get it working again is to turn the ignition off and on again. Then everything resets and then it plays BUT the same problem will repeat.

Is there a chance that the extension cable is faulty? That runs from the adapoter and out the dashboard? However, the turing off issue still persists with bluetooth which has no connection to the aux cable and the extension.

I would areally appreciate if anyone can help with this issue.

Thank you guys!

Hi Taher,

I think the unit may not be compatible with the B9010. My unit is the standard stereo for the Mk3, which is not navigation. I went to the eBay sellers site, and it states the following further down the notes  - It might not work with certain Toyota Navigation model, send us an enquiry on the compatibility issue if you have a Toyota Navigation System.

I also found the following:-

IMPORTANT NOTES:

Factory CD changer will be disabled when using this device

Certain TOYOTA head units may require a different size wire harness,

please send us a message to confirm with before you place order

Known head units that require a different wire harness:

Corolla TSpirit VVTi 1.6

Avensis Navigation System B9010

Incompatible with RAV4 2007 head units

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Car-Bluetooth-USB-SD-AUX-MP3-Player-Adapter-TOYOTA-Camry-Previa-RAV4-Prius-Yaris-/222408178485?hash=item33c88f7b35:g:V7UAAOSwOgdYoXIZ

I would disconnect the unit from the car immediately!

There are some units that will work with Nav units, and using the Y cable keep the CD changer if installed. The LA Power unit I use works, but has only one issue related to the bluetooth. The sound quality is poor, compressed compared to using the USB and Aux. It also comes out mono. The sound is a little muted compared to rest of the inputs. I set the volume on the phones bluetooth high for that source. I noticed this with another system Xcarlink. The bluetooth again is a little quiet, the functions via the steering controls work well. I listen to the music via USB and it is great. The Aux is for friends if they want to listen to their own music (very rare).

Contact the seller regarding your situation and the info regarding the B9010.

Konrad you are a legend.

Thank you for getting back to me so quickly. I truly appreciate it. I will contact the seller and see what the response is. I really hope I can get this working.

I'll have to find out what this different size harness wire is.

Thanks again

T

Frank,

Before you buy any of the adapters, check with compatibility with the vendors. Also consider how you will use the system - use memory sticks, take phone calls or play music via bluetooth. The unit I use (LA Power) is not as good using the bluetooth compared to my Novero Trusty One(similar to Parrot 3100). The levels are lower than all the other sources voice calls and music, plus the music is mono! It still works well, but unlike some more expensive units, no track title or artist. This does not bother me, as I put the music on the memory stick, plus my eyes are on the road! My car came with voice/calls only bluetooth, and I have two phones. My Windows phone has a great Sat-nav which works via the cars Bluetooth, but no music playback (early standard stereo until model changes and upgrades). The best thing about the adapter is the steering controls.

If you are using an iPhone, look elsewhere. It is not compatible via USB, and I just mentioned the Bluetooth sound.

Here are a list of the known higher quality USB/SD/AUX/Bluetooth makers - Xcarlink, Connects2, Dension, Grom. Next are the cheaper/lesser known names - Yatour, LaPower, and a few other no name generic models.

Thanks for the heads up! I use a Samsung Galaxy phone and have been looking at the yatour which I've heard is good for the Toyota units.I'm looking just for the music side of it.

For playing MP3 via USB or SD all the units including the Yatour are great. I use a 16 gb memory stick with my adapter and it plays perfectly. The quality is great (depends on compression), and it holds all the music I want. My adapter accepts 32gb memory sticks max. I use the 6 folder system, which are seen as discs. As I said before you will only numbers.

I have not tried using the USB from the phone - I have both Samsung Galaxy and Windows Mobile. I might give them a try.

Hi konrad.

Hope you are able to assist.

Will the following work in the same way as your module?

Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/351986928198

Thanks in advance

Paul

That device should work the same as most adapters on Toyota stereos with 6+6 CD changer sockets, except a few of the NAV units. Apparently the cable needs to be wired differently to work on NAV stereos!

Gary you are right about the early basic stereo with bluetooth for phone calls only. I have used my Nokia Windows phone as a satnav once, and the bluetooth works with that, because it is classed as 'Voice'. It works seamlessly cutting in with timely directions. I think the stereo was replaced with another model, supporting A2DP music playback and USB during 2011.

I've been looking at adding dab but only find dension receivers. Are you or anybody aware of any other dab units on the market for less than £100 that can be plugged into the usb port?

Thanks Paul

I can't find any integrated DAB systems under £100 (not the inferior FM transmitting versions)! I have found some priced well over £100.

Here are a few to look at for:-

http://www.connects2.co.uk/products/AutoDAB

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Auto-DAB-Toyota-ab-Bj-2011-DAB-Nachrustung-fur-viele-Toyota-Modele-DAB-Modul-/232279510652?hash=item3614f00e7c:g:pmAAAOSw4YdY0lo2

The German site sells the same unit with Toyota wiring harness as Dynamic Sounds, a London based in car specialist - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AutoDAB-Digital-Radio-Recevier-Tuner-DAB-ADD-On-Adaptor-For-Honda-City-Civic-/270988761427?hash=item3f18305953:g:0B0AAMXQPatTGegK

https://www.dynamicsounds.co.uk/oem-car-radio-dab-interface-adaptors.html

Dynamic Sounds don't list a Toyota version within their line up, though a German eBay site shows one is available. Try contacting Dynamic Sounds to see if they can get the Toyota version from the stockist.
