Avensis Steering Wheel Shakes When Braking & Strange Behaviour

HI guys I have blueprint ADL disc and pads on front - most likely never again

over 50mph if I brake the steering wheel shakes. and if im breaking its like its jerking when coming to a stop/lights

there is no lip on disc and pads have plenty of life.

any suggestions

I was thinking the discs were warped I dont think I have done many miles on them.

How many pistons do you have on the calipers? If there is only one there's a chance the 'sliders' are sticking and need cleaning up and a lubricant applied.

just the one... I will do this and report back,,, best type of grease to use ? silicone grease??

As it only has one piston the sliding part, is it like a short shaft behind a grease cover or exposed and a bit rusty? The shiny shaft type then yes silicone, or red or white grease will help a lot, available from say Halfords......if it is the exposed rusty slider type then a good strip down and the metal parts polished up with emery cloth should be ok, just make sure everything moves freely as it sounds like something has partially seized up as fitting new discs and pads makes the metal parts work in a different place that hasn't been used for a long time since the original discs/pads were fitted. If you jack the car up you may well find one wheel is harder to turn telling you which side is sticking but what you do to one side you must do the same to the other.

I had the same issue with ADL Blueprint brakes (disc and pads) a year and a half ago, then the same with Eicher brakes. I have had Apec brakes since April, and no problems. I did change the ABS ECU that failed, and the brake fluid.

The brakes pull straight and work fine.

I read that the disc can get contamination on the surface with causes the judder - the disc is not actually warped! The cure is to clean the disc with fine grit paper. I wonder if the pads material are the cause.

So "I" has had issues with the same brand means there could be a quality control problem. Time will tell if there is another problem and the new discs judder too.

This behaviour is 'apparently' caused by the driver's braking technique. If you have a habit of holding the pads onto the disc after coming to a stop then a small portion of the disc overheats. This can cause warping/distortion.

Dump the discs and pads and swap them for mintex. The sliders don't cause judder. If they're sticking it would result in binding and overheating on that hub/wheel over a 10 mile journey. This would be obvious to the driver as excessive deceleration would occur when the foot is taken off the accelerator pedal.

LT motors in Sheraton Street Stockton is the place to go for Mintex spares. They've never let me down in 20 years.

I am aware of holding not holding the car on the brakes, especially after travelling downhill and coming to a stop. I use the handbrake when possible, though with the EBP it will be a little less.

My Mk1 is back on the Apec brakes after 2 years of failures and since April all good. I used Apec in the past on this car with only wear and tear, grooving and brake dust causing low speed "bass" like sound after 5 years usage. I rather that than crazy brake judder from a so called recommended brand.

I'd just like to throw in... I very rarely use the handbrake, and almost always hold the car with the footbrake, as does just about everyone with an auto (including however many million Americans). I reckon the brakes would need to be red hot for any warping to occur.

I live in a hilly area and try to use engine braking and press the brake intermittently, not constantly. At the junction of the roads are give way with clear view, so it is just a pause before proceeding.

I would say I could have been unlucky with the Blueprint and Eicher brakes, because the Apec's are are working without any issues. 3 more months will tell if the judder appears. The issue normally happens after 3 to 5 months then gets worse!

Had same problem, and it recurred after fitting new discs (Mintex). Had the offending Nearside one skimmed and problem stopped for years. Came back last year and fitted spare disc from last swap. End of problem. Seems to be associated in my case with extreme cold!

I can report that since fitting the Apec brakes on my Mk1 back in April 2015, they have been okay to date.

With both the Blueprint and Eicher brakes, they were juddering by 4 months of installation, and very badly too!
