Loss Of Power On Lifting Foot From Accelerator

Hello everyone,

I am new to the forum and have owned a 2002 rav4 d4d for 6 months. Until recently I have been very pleased with it but have recently developed a problem.

Around town no problems. When driving on dual carriageway at say 60mph in fifth I lift foot off of the accelerator and the car looses power. The engine keeps running and the car slowly looses speed. Parking and then waiting a few seconds the car will then happily pull away with full power and the problem may not happen for a day or two. I have looked through a lot of the posts already on the forum about power loss but cannot find any that have the same symptoms. There were no fault codes on the two occasions I had these checked and there are no warning lights.

I would be very grateful for any advice if you know what the problem may be.

Thanks

Try putting your foot back on the accelerator :P

Sorry it had to be done. I had a slightly different issue but the basic logic is the same, work through the options from easy/cheap to hard/expensive.

When has it been serviced in the last 12 months/10k? If not get the oil/oil filter/air filter changed and whip the air box out and have a close look at the fuel filter. It's a job that's often neglected by garages as it's not easy to get at and by now the bolts are prone to sheering (Plusgas dismantling oil is your friend, WD40 if you're stuck but it's not the right tool for the job). The filter is due every 40k and in my case was on a previous service bill, but I was greeted with a genuine but rusty looking Toyota branded filter supposedly fitted by a garage who had 50 miles away from a dealer.

Next suspected culprit is the SCV's - have they been changed previously that you're aware of? They're not the cheapest part to replace at £170ish - not from a dealer, but stripping them is reasonably easy and straight forward and you can test them to see if they work, people have pulled them and coaxed them back to life short term, but replacement is the only cure. See the excellent guide here: http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/topic/87986-42-d4d-scv-valve-replacement/

Check the brake pedal. I suspect it could be triggering the brake lights, which then makes the vehicle think you've got a stuck throttle, and kills the power. My last car developed this fault recently.
