Tappet Noise?

GDA-Celica

So i've had my T Sport about 3 months, the first thing I noticed was a ticking from the top end of the engine. Previously i've found that to be hydraulic tappets needing an oil change, so i went ahead and did a full flush with good oil. Made sure i got some with a binding agent in to help lube up that lovely engine.

So yea, that didn't do a great deal of anything.

Read through some older posts on here and found that the Celica doesn't have tappets? Just rockers? And that them being a bit noisy is pretty standard and that its added to by noisy injectors.

Suppose i've almost answered my own question but just wanted to get some more info really. Double check I'm not over looking anything or that either of these making noise could become an issue? I can hear it at idle and up to about 2500/3000 revs before the engine/exhaust drowns out the noise.

Any info would be great as i want to keep the car in the best condition i can. Don't want it falling apart around me like previous bangers. I like this one!

Pretty standard I'd say...this engine can be a bit "tappety"

I know some have changed their oil spec to 5w/40 (instead of the usual/recommended 5w/30) and report an improvement.

I might give the 5w/40 (fully synthetic) a go when I next change oil.

Ah well, thats that answers. I did use 5w/30 with 30% binding agent. Shal have a look at 5w/40 on the next one i think.

Also read a few things about the tappets clearence, ya dont know where i could find that info? Maybe an engine manual or set up guides or what have ya.

I'd only recommend you try 5W40 with the high revving VVTi-L engine, Neil.

Your 140 will be perfectly happy, and very slightly more economical, on 5W30.

Fair play. Though mine is the 190BHP.

By oil binder, I assume you mean something like Wynn’s friction proofing and not Oilex binder. I’ve used Wynn’s friction proofing in the past, it’s good for older style worn engines that are using oil and/or have worn and rattly crankshaft bearings but these older type additives have no place in a modern twin-overhead cam engine with VVT.
If you’re using something like 5w 40 oil with 30% ‘thickener’ additive then you could be putting your engine at risk of serious damage. In my opinion you should be using no higher grade than 5w 30 and try something like Wynn’s hydraulic valve lifter additive if you think the valve gear is noisy.

I've only put 5w 30 in as thats what the car needs. The thicker was only a recomendation which I dont need to look at anyway as i've just changed the oil. Not doing it twice. Haha.

As for the binding agent I mentioned, was just a Lucas oil 5w 30 with 30% binding agent in it. Nothing to specific that its gonna kill my engine if its incorrect. So hopefully, all is good. Did just try posting a picture with this reply but it wouldn't let me
