Is it possible to buy a carrier which can be mounted at the back with the spare wheel off?

I can see those that are attached to the wheel but TBH, I don't feel comfortable putting all that weight on the rear door

thank for any tips & hints

Yes, the one I have on my 4.3 would fit yours, sorry cannot remember the make, but I got it at Halfords years ago.

Was actually using it this morning to collect my bike from the cycle shop, as it needed a new pair of boots!!

Personally I've never liked the tailgate mounted carriers - too much risk of bodywork damage and, if they're not fitted properly or the bikes move after being mounted, they can obscure the tail lights with the added risk of being rear-ended.

I've always used Halfords bike racks that mount to the roof bars. Never had any problem with them and all you have to remember is to check max heights in multi-storey car parks, etc.

On that point I once saw a guy with his bikes mounted on the roof of his Volvo estate bringing the tunnel at T3 at Heathrow to a complete halt when his bikes got ripped off as he went under the height warning hoarding! Lots of really pi55ed off drivers in the ensuing jam.

I had my doubts also, but the one I have evenly distributes the load and there is no heavy points on the car anywhere.

Just make sure you put it on properly and it will be fine.

Bit of a pain putting it on and once on, you cannot open the rear door.

But it's fine for what and how I use it.

the roof mount option is no go for me .

I ll see what is available. Perhaps design one and have it made!

Have you looked at towbar mounted cycle carriers from someone like Witter?

Just thinking about the carrier I mentioned, when I bought it, I owned a Rx350, but when I changed my car to the Rav it works fine, so in my opinion it should fit a large range of tail gate type cars/4x4.
