Help! 1985 Camry Idiling Problems!

Hello!

I have an '85 Camry that has a terrible idle. Whenever I start the car, it idles poorly, and unless I press the gas pedal, it DIES. Whenever the car gets hot, its ok in park or neutral for a little while without hitting the gas. If I drop it into drive, boom it idles poorly again. Any help is appreciated!

Look for any split vaccum hoses first around the cylinder head/intake manifold area.Then change the fuel filter and make sure the air filter is clean - try running it for a couple of miles without the air filter fitted to see if there is any change.

Is that a carburretor engine or injection?. It sounds like the cold start device isn't working properly. If its a carburretor then I assume it will have an auto choke as if it was a manual choke you would simply use it as needed. Auto chokes can become unreliable as they age. If its injected then there will probably be a sensor that needs replacing, unless its fitted with a cold start injector although even they only normally operate in extremely cold conditions.
