Changing From Steel Wheels To Alloys

Hi there,

I have been got some universal fitting alloy wheels for my aygo but was wondering if its ok to use the bolts from the steel wheels for the alloys? The person who had them had them on a punto with the steel wheel bolts holding them on but I want to be 100% sure before I put myself and others at any risk.

Hi Katie,

You shouldn't really as the steel bolts are harder than the alloys & you can get wear.

Did you have locking nuts on your steels? if not, I imagine that you will want to for your alloys so you might as well go the whole hog & get new bolts too.

I take it that you have got the correct spigot adaptor?

P.S. putting alloys on for most insurance companies is a notifiable modification & may affect your premium.

Will this also apply to buying winter wheels (tyres + steels) from dealers - that one need to buy new wheel bolts + lock nuts + spigot rings?

Toyota oem steels & alloys have different seats so if swapping genuine Toyota alloys & steels, yes as they are different. Oem wheels don't need spigot ring adaptors as they are made to the correct centre size for the car, aftermarket have them so that they can cover many cars with 1 wheel & adjust with spigot ring adaptors.

If you are talking in general then as I said you shouldn't really run alloy wheels with steel bolts/nuts & obviously you should also check that the shape/size of the seats is the same.

but I thought that you were running CrossClimates on the oem wheels?

Been informed by the local alloy centre that the wheel's (ripspeed)are Halfords own wheels and i would need to get spigot adaptor and bolts from them. On visiting Halfords they say they no longer do alloys and it may be really hard to get the ripspeed parts. Surely some other brand would have same fittings?

Pretty sure that some of Halford's alloys came from Wolfrace.

I thought steels didn't have locking nuts? Or at least ones that could be removed by any tool rather than specific ones for the car like with alloys? Just wondering as when I had my winter tyres on the steels it would have been a slightly easier job for a garage to swap the tyres rather than alloys.
