2 Ltr Petrol - - Oil Consumption

I'm hoping someone could help with a recent problem. My Avensis 2 ltr petrol (54 reg, 95000 miles) is using a lot of oil. Much smoke comes from exhaust, noticably when cold and the power seems a bit down as is the mpg. I've just had it serviced a month early at which time the mechanic did an engine flush. He says he's checked it out on 'tinterweb and says it's a well known problem although the only reference I can find is for diesel engines. In the 3 years I've owned it, it's been an excellent car but I'm worried that this might prove to be expensive. Can anyone please shed any light on what the problem might be and any suggested solution?

Your problem sounds like the following: http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/topic/153900-valve-seals/

I was looking at one of Big Mo's posts today, and wondered how he is getting on? How spooky. He complained about smoky exhaust.

The only thing I can say is, top up again and see how much oil is being consumed. What grade and quality of oil is in the engine?

I don't think the engine is worn at 95000 miles. Also it was the 1.8 1ZZ VVTI engine from 2000 to 2006, that was mostly known for the oil burning issues. The later diesels had their own issues.

1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 litre VVT-i engines can start to use up to a litre of oil every 600 miles after 40,000 miles due to a bore liner problem. If under 5 years old and Toyota maintained, under TSB EG 6020, Toyota wouldl usually replace FOC.

if its the oil burning issue your best running it on a supply of cheap oil or putting in used engine from a car after 2006.

Thank you for the replies. The mechanic says he uses fully synthetic oil as thats what's recommended. The reason I bought the car 3 years ago was that it was 1 owner low mileage with full Toyota dealer service history. Since then I've done about 8000 miles a year, the car serviced annually (not Toyota dealer) and the car has been driven carefully - I average about 40 mpg. Obviously I don't relish the expense of a recon engine which my mechanic says could be £1200 incl labour as I don't suppose the car is worth much more.
