Intermittent P1349 Fault

Hello, my '02 Rav 4 every now & again throws up the amber engine warning light, on hooking up my code reader it is the P1349 VVT Malfunction. Car runs perfectly smooth whilst the light is on & i can usually clear the fault code & the amber light can stay off for days on end then appears again.

So therefore i think it is working fine normally again or else the warning light would just appear instantly again when starting/running the car.......wondered if anyone had any ideas on the possible cause or am i looking at an expensive trip to the dealer!!!!
