Grinding Noise When I Brake To Stop At Very Low Speed

Thanks all for the posts... hope it will help, trying a different garage on Tuesday. Unfortunately I can't do my own car!!

Previous garage seems unadventurous in investigating, but has said he's checked everything he can! difficulty is on fast roads it doesn't show, on town ones it does, so trying the garage in a town, rather than here in the sticks!!

I will try and relay all this info, and really hope they are ones who will investigate rather than charge alot for diagnostic and changing parts (on positive side previous garage didn't want to charge me if it didn't fix issue, except for the parts (back brake pads and central brake mechanism, but has taken so much time and being without car... such a saga.

With our fault. though at low speed only and no ABS fault light coming on, it was very random sometimes just one or twice on a 30 min dirve, which is a real pain for any mechanic to try and pin down.

However, now we have replaced the broken reluctor ring on the offside we can literally see that the nearside one is going to fail soon, as we can now see/ understand whats been happening.  Basically the part of the driveshaft the Ring fit onto, slowly corrodes and both pushes the ring out of position and as with ours expands and causes the ring to split, which then starts slipping giving false readings, though why at only very slow speeds we are not too sure.

Though not a Toyota ring you can see on this picture what we mean and how the rust builds up under the ring.

A very close inspection of the front rings may reveal the cause of your trouble, though it could also be a failing ABS sensor.

As your car is nearly as old as ours, think your problem could well be a broken ring, hopefully you can find a garage /mechanic who knows of such problems as abs ring  and sensors failures are quite common on many cars, not just Toyotas.

How time consuming is it to replace?

Very mixed really.

Initially started to check the front sensors, but removing them was a really bad job as the single bolts  were badly corroded on the nut and thread, had to use  both a Nut remover and a bolt extractor, even though we soaked in penny fluid the night before.  If you know your Ring is broken, no need to remove the sensor.

To remove the ring was quiet easy as the wishbone ball joint to axle was attached by three bolts on our replacement arm ( think the original was welded).

You just need a proper hub nut socket and a very long bar as its very tight, though do remember to knock out/back the nuts locking tab first or you can damage the thread.

No need to remove the driveshaft from the gearbox end.

Once the old ring is off you need to clean away as much rust as possible but must avoid taking too much good metal off or the new ring will not hold in place.

A good torque wrench to get the correct pressures on reassembly.

Plenty of ytubes on doing this job, but many just hammer the ring on cold,   much better to use a blow lamp and heat the ring up as much as possible  on the bench /vice etc  and it should almost slip on fully.

We got the Rings for just £5 from here, but depending on the state of your driveshafts/CV joints /rubbers  you might find it more cost effective to replace the whole shaft with ring fitted.

Thanks for that info, really interesting, and hopefully will solve the problem!! the garage in town tested the abs sensor and couldn't find anything wrong, and wasn't really interested in looking further, said to come back friday if it still happens - basically been happen for nearly three months every time I drive!! but yes intermittent enough that when the mechanics look they can't find it.

Anyway, I then just drove to a garage nearby that I used to use in my hometown, and just hadn't because they are booked up for weeks... and asked them, they gave me the time of day to explain, which was great, as the others just seemed uninterested!! and he mentioned that it could be exactly this problem you mention with the driveshaft cog (if that's the same as the ring) but that's so great you posted, thank you... I will take all the info on here in a list, and feel relieved knowing that this is a garage that will investigate and not just shrug off.. fingers crossed!! it's booked in for the 12th July... that's their earliest availability!

they have said it's safe to drive, as brakes all working fine, just get that noise. so really hope so... if anyone knows differently, let me know!

I will update here after.  but so hope it's sorted this next time. Very best all.

  • 4 weeks later...

Finally, the saga is over, 9th time lucky and the garage I always used to use!!

Turned out to be the bolt that held the ABS sensor, on the o/s... so wasn't the reluctor ring, but they checked that and the driveshaft too, which are fine. They also cleaned up the rust/corrosion around the bolt and hub... I hope this is helpful for anyone... and really appreciate all the posts here so much, kept me going, thank you all.

I am I suppose concerned now that there could be alot of corrosion elsewhere, as initially in Feb it was the break pipes at the back that had corroded - I live by the sea too so that doesn't help - but for now, fingers crossed!!

Very best wishes, Amanda

Glad you have got it sorted,  those bolts do corrode badly, we had to drill/extract  ours out they were so bad, think its all down to the fact that the sensor is only held down with one bolt rather than two, which allows water etc to get underneath it, sealed ours with silicone on reassembly.

Our old Avensis , 1998 model and current 2006 Corolla seem quiet well protected agaist the elements compared to some makes, but rust will catch us all out sooner or later.

Just ask your garage to do a  corrosion check and report when doing the yearly service / mot.
