Hi

Can anyone point me in the direction to getting some info on them - does a light come on warning you, or only when its too late ? Is it ok if you only do 1 long journey a week? Specialist region people - do they work?

any help please.

Thanks

hi there,

If its your 4.2 d4d that you are worried about, don`t because they were never fitted to the 4.2.

Plenty of info on Google. To be specific, Google Toyota dpf Advice and see what pops up.

Toyota have confirmed to me that there are no such warning lights on my model.

So it's a bit of a lottery, you just have to drive your car and hope that you never have a dpf issue.

Apparently, your car could be performing a dpf regeneration without you knowing and you could turn your engine off before the process completes, which does the car no good at all!!

No more desiel cars for me after this one AND if I did buy another one I would only get one that has a dpf warning light to assist and notify the driver.

Desiel in my opinion are designed for motorway driving or for work horse type vehicles such as tractors, diggers etc and are no use for around town driving doing short stop and start journeys, as the temperature will never reach a high enough level in the dpf to burn off all the crap inside, so it just builds up and finally blocks.

However, saying that, I use my car on motorways and in town and the dpf gets loads of chances to do a self regeneration cleaning process, but mine did not and totally blocked.....hence no more desiels for me!!

That's a worry Bobby if you use your car on motorways where it gets plenty of chances to do a passive regen and it still blocked up. I believe when the modern Vauxhall goes into a regen mode even if you turn off the engine it continues to run until it's complete. Caused a few owners concern when they pull into their driveway and the engine refuses to shut off, not only that but both engine fans come on and the noise is a bit disconcerting. Better than a blocked DPF though.

It is a worry and Toyota GB know it's a issue, that's why mine was cleared by the Toyota Technicians driving it in 3rd gear at a certain rev all the way from Reading to Newbury and back to perform a forced regen, if it had not cleared, I had my verbal boxing gloves ready to have a go at Toyota GB.

I don't enjoy driving my Rav as much as I used to because it could happen again!!!

Regens happen under certain conditions, engine temperature over 85c, EGT at correct temp, revs and speed etc. This is why cars tootling around town block up, they never get the right conditions for a regen to take place. You might also get the correct conditions to occur, but not for long enough before you step off the pedal and for the regen to fail. Your Toyota will not regen on the drive. You will not know when it is regening either, you cannot tell by just the way it drives

Thinking about this last night, I wonder how they manage to sell any.

You can apply that to any modern diesel, they all have a DPF but they dont all block up. If your journey involves a few miles on the motorway / dual carriageway you will be fine

What about Bobby McLeish, his journeys included motorway driving but he still wound up with a blocked filter. Do you reckon he had other troubles eg the EGR valve?

Also quick question about DPF regen - do they all emit white smoke and does the white smoke continue until it's finished? If it did that would always be a sign to the driver that a passive regen was under way.

I have no idea about Bobby's car, it does depend on a lot of considerations

i have driven cars on forced regen and you see no more smoke than normal driving

To be honest I haven't a clue what to do now - i am 4 miles to work on a dual carriageway. I do 15 miles each way on a motorway most weekends and tootle about all over the place on a sunday. The car is an auto, so does this make any difference. Cardiff toyota said there is no warning light and if it is under 5 year warranty it wouldn't be covered. My local specialist said probably better off steering clear.....

You would be better off in a petrol car or Hybrid doing that sort of mileage

When I had my dpf issue, Toyota GB gave it to me in writing, that it will be covered if it's caused by a mechanical or electrical fault.....what else could it be?

Luckily my local Mr T managed a forced regen.

If it had not worked, I would have fought with Toyota GB until the end!!

What else can we do but drive it, get it properly serviced and put proper branded diesel in it.

Especially when my model does not have a warning light!!

Last diesel for me, that's for sure!!
