Avensis Electric Flash

I visited a friend tonight and after about an hour their electric supply failed. I went out to my car and opened the driver's door to get a small LED torch that was kept in the pocket in the driver's door. I was sorting through the contents when there was a large flash and report which appeared to come from the pocket. It was very windy outside, thanks to Barney, but I could see no reason for the flash and no sign of any electric damage in the door. the car started as usual. It was quite un nerving and the only thing I can think of was that there was a huge build up of static, maybe related to the windy conditions which somehow I managed to earth out with resultant flash. I felt nothing but friends in the house heard a noise and saw a flash from the car. The car functioned normally afterwards but I found it a bit un nerving and would like to know what the cause was. An electric supply pole about 20 yards away later showed a large flash down the side of the pole which I assume was caused by a surge.

Any suggestions welcome.

Freak static discharge to earth, and being close to supply pole. You covered all possibilities.

The car should be fine.

Thanks Konrad, that must be the answer as no problems with the car but it was quite un nerving at the time.
