Loud Wind Noise

Hi all,

I've had the avensis tourer for a couple of weeks now and all is going great.

A couple issues I have found with the car, firstly, there is an awful lot of wind noise coming from the driver side air vent. I thought it may have been due to the high wind speed we had around Bristol but now that it had died off and I'm still getting it. I'm a bit confused by it. I tried closing the vent but it is still there. It only happens at motorway speed.

Mpg wise, I'm getting around 36 around town. I thought it would have been a little bit higher. Also, in a fully ladened trip with a bike on top, 400mile trip to scotland I got about 34, 35. Is this normal for a 2012 1.8 auto?

Any advice?!

Cheers

Check if the chrome trim underneath the drivers door window is loose/misaligned, especially at the front. Also check the alignment of the door, if it's sticking out further than the passenger one it might need adjusted. Both these points will give you wind noise.

My 12 plate 1.8 auto saloon gives around high 30's mpg around town. On a recent return trip from Glasgow to Torquay with 3 adults plus luggage I got about 42 mpg on the way down sitting around 70 mph, and about 39 mpg on the way back sitting around 80 mph. I tend to drive quite economically tho, ie I let it roll on down hills and let it slow back a bit up hills. On my daily commute in the middle of the night on quiet roads I can get 45-50 mpg, or towards 500 miles from tank. I find the gearbox a bit 'revvy' on the motorways, ie too eager to jump from 2000 revs to 3000 on the slightest acceleration, and I try to lift my foot a bit and avoid this.

BTW my trip computer reads 5% high, and I suspect the speed is 10% high too.

From my perspective neither of your issues is normal. I owned my 1.8 CVT Tourer for about 4 years, changed it earlier this month, it was very quiet with regards to wind noise and I was averaging 37mpg in winter and 39 in summer with just over 40 on long motorway runs cruising at 75 to 80 If you are new to driving a CVT then this may be some of the reason for low Mpg. Good acceleration can be had by using a medium throttle as the ratio changes up much quicker thus using less fuel, also lifting off the throttle earlier will help as I found it rolled easily without throttle input.
