My last car couldn't get into any gear - like u said physically impossible.

Might not be same fault, but -

It was failed slave cylinder

The gear selection mechanism for Toyotas relies on two cables connecting the gear lever to the transmission. One cable controls the forwards - backwards motion of the lever. The other governs the left - right. There are bushings at the transmission end which wear with usage giving a vagueness to gear selection. It is usual for the forward - backwards bush to wear more for obvious reasons.

Can you select 5th - 6th without problems? If not then one of the bushing may have failed or even the cable itself. Get someone to change gear (as best they can) whilst you look a the movement at the transmission end. Bonnet up - passenger side - about two thirds of the way back in the engine bay from the front and 30 - 40cm down from bonnet level is where you need to look. You'll need a torch...

Thank you for response. I will go out in bit and have a good look around. Forward and backwards movement is fine just side to side sometimes blocking 1st and second. Then swaps to block 5th and 6th!

I had a quick look this afternoon. Took the air filter out to get in there then realised want Battery out as well. Think it is a breakdown at the gearbox end rather than selecter box end cables seem fine.
