T180 estate

Trying to post using this stupid app thingy...

Mine's a 56 plate. Had major surgery after HGF costing nearly £2K. Picked it up last week and now there's smoke billowing out the back. Water level OK, no pressure evident in the reservoir. EGF etc all cleaned during HG repair, so DPF now the main suspect. Was told to chuck in some cleaner and rev it down the motorway. Who knows if that will do the trick?

I thought my old MG ZT was the world's most unreliable car, but this? First time with a Toyota and it's put me right off. Thinking about getting rid already! Should have gone with my first instinct, Honda. Even an x-type wouldn't give me this much grief!

If you love your T180, I don't believe you!

Cheer me up someone...

Sorry to hear that! Love my T27 180 Spirit,my first Toyota too. great MPG, just dropped to 44.1.

Re HG, did you have a new /recon engine fitted or just head worked? If you look thru past topics you will see a lot about HG failure for various reasons, worth a look or someone with more knowledge, experiance may give you more info. Good luck, keep us posted.

Thanks mate.

Only got the car in September and it's spent most of the time in the garage.

Head skim, new head set, bolts, water pump, glow plugs... Didn't even get the engine block skimmed. Apparently the pistons are in good nick.

Yeah I've read dozens of posts, mostly doom and gloom because Lexus didn't make a decent diesel unit. Lots of replacement engines noted.

I'm gutted because I research cars to death before buying used, but there you go. Stung again!

Cheers

as far as we know under 5% (probably well under) of 1AD/2AD engines develop the problem but there is a suggestion that prevalence increases as power output increases (so T180>150bhp 2.2>2.0).

Who is doing all this work, an independent or a Toyota dealer? Toyota say that the heads shouldn't be skimmed & moved to factory exchange units rather than dealer rebuilds.

What colour is the smoke? If it's white it may just be the DPF trying to regenerate.

Knowledge of the potential problems with these engines goes back to at least 2010 & possibly earlier. It's on here, it's on Honest John etc. ...

P.S. The Honda Accord diesel has had it's issues too. & Mazda and BMW & Ford & Vauxhall & & ....

Thanks mate. Indie garage did the HG job but widely recommended. Take your point about the replacement unit but that was never mooted as an option.

I threw a couple of bottles of Forte in the tank this morning and took it down the motorway at 3K rpm, (followed by 30 minutes urban). No smoke, but as soon as I hit 70, the engine management and VSC lights came on again. I think you're right about the DPF regen cycle.

By the way, found that the DPF sensor's been bypassed. Will be rigging it up later and await further fun and games! Then I'm thinking, if the sensor isn't on, how did the warning lights come on?

Wayne,

I did a quick read up on the KV6 engine and they were initially hand built. The liners were not lined up accurately which led head gasket failure. Allegedly when the engine production went automated, the head gasket issue was reduced.

The KV6 was also licence produced by Kia in Korea, and is still produced in China By SAIC.

Good to know

Doesn't matter - don't have a KV6 anymore :)

Rover MG Forum says rare KV6 have HGF

Having owned one, they are actually quite reliable (apart from HGF)

Just things to look out for are the radiator fan, air bag ligh due to electric seat, Thermo housing, the dreaded inlet manifold rattling and like classic cars the common leak in boot well!

Slow as they were and like Marmite u love or loathe them

I actually liked mine but was disappointed by driving pleasure :(

Honest!

My Hybrid feels like a racing car compared to my ZT 180!

meant to do 0-62 in 7.7s in manual form or 8.9 in auto. Auris Hybrid is 10.9?

My was a petrol 180bhp auto - so about 9sec

Auris is about 12sec

It's not so much about the 0 - 60 (or 0 - 62 in metric equivalence) in seconds, it's more about the experience. I remember when i tested an Auris hybrid while i still had my 1.6 multi-mode the hybrid felt much livelier and responsive, more pleasurable if you like.

Trouble is we're all fixated with specifications and figures. I can remember a time when young ladies figures were gauged by how close they were to "perfect" which was 36 - 24 - 36. Talking of which i well remember the experience of unhooking my first pair of Double D's!!! :ermm::ermm::ermm:

Maybe my post would have been better in that Misted Up Inside Windows thread!

But for the sake of the moderator lets just refer to this as the WW2 Aircraft Post

Guys, I would like to know how Joseph (original poster) has got on, out of interest.

If his rebuilt engine succeeds when an engine swap is recommended, then there is hope for others.

Then the garage that did work, will know what the criteria is for repair.

This could give a little hope for others.

I am sure that there have been others who have had their heads skimmed.
