Ive also seen HID kits for the 4.2 Rav but was wondering about the headlight type too. Is it probably better to just get decent halogen bulbs?

You should buy from Autobulbs Direct, this is where I got my Nightbreakers from.

If they blow within 12 months, just send it (them) back with a copy of the receipt and they will send you a no quibble replacement.

They are great bulbs, but due to my car having auto lights, I am guessing the bulbs don't like this, as I have had two bulbs blown, but have been replaced free of charge.

Night Breakers or Xtreme Vision, HID retrofits are not legal - the bulbs are not e marked, they lack washers and self levelling and the beam pattern is not designed for HID. Also all a 3rd party has to do in the event of an accident is claim to be dazzled by your illegal headlights and your insurance claim that was clear cut just became a nightmare.

Osram Nightbreakers Unlimited are UK road legal, unless I am seriously missing something !!

My car has passed its MOT with these fitted .

Osram Night breaker Unlimited bulbs and Philips X-Treme Vision bulbs are fully road legal within the EU.

Both have been regular recommendations in the Auto Express bulb tests over the years.

Information pages from the manufacturers -

http://www.philips.co.uk/c-p/12972XVB1/x-tremevision-car-headlight-bulb/overview

http://www.osram.com/osram_com/news-and-knowledge/automotive-special/automotive-performance-lamps-full-power-of-light-for-your-vehicle/night-breaker-unlimited-product-details/index.jsp

Some HID bulbs will also be fully road legal - again those from Philips and Osram, as OE manufacturers, will be:

http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/accessories-tyres/93348/best-hid-headlight-bulbs-2015

To ensure legality, especially as regards HID kits, one should check that packaging, etc displays the 'E' mark.

We've used either Osram or Philips upgrade bulbs in our cars since 2001, and never had any issues with their legality, passing MOT's, etc.

To use HID lights legally you are also required to have headlight washers & levelling - if your car doesn't have these you can't just replace the existing bulbs (even with E marked) & be legal.
