Hi,

Times are hard and I'm thinking of downsizing from a 2.2 Avensis T-Spirit (2012) to an Aygo Black (2010). I know, bit of a difference but I did have a 2011 Aygo on loan for a week a few years ago and it was a great little car.

The car I was looking at has around 50k on the clock, and I would be doing about 20k a year mainly to work and back (approx 45 miles round trip combined mway and town)

Just wondering what they are like at higher miles? Probably be pushing 110k after 3 years, it is only a little city car after all.

If you service it regularly it should be fine and with the cost of fuel falling and getting in excess of 60 mpg you will save money as well

Thanks Raistlin.

How much difference do you think that it is likely to make financially to you? At 4 years old & presumably a fair few miles your Avensis' value will already have dropped significantly from new.

You will probably save ~£500pa on fuel, ~£120pa on road tax, ~£130pa on servicing (based on Toyota fixed price servicing for 20000 miles pa), don't know about insurance for you & where you are.

I know that I would notice the difference in driving an Aygo v an Avensis though.

The Avensis is on 38k miles so not too many, I'very not had it from new so missed the worst of depreciation. It's on access Toyota £225 a month, it's due a £350 service soon, insurance is about £550 (town centre postcode)

So over the next 3 months the Avensis is going to cost me best part of £1,000 in repayments and servicing. Plus the insurance. I'very been offered a different 2012 Aygo for around £80 a month. So for what the Avensis is going to cost me over the next 3 months I can have 12months of motoring in the Aygo. So quite a big difference.

I know the Aygo also needs servicing and insuring but it's a lot lot cheaper.

I know there's going to be a big difference in driving one, I do like the Avensis, really can't afford it anymore though.

Could also consider the 1.0 litre Yaris - same engine as the Aygo, but a bit more room, etc. Slightly more expensive servicing.

I think you will miss the comfort and quality of the larger car. I did when I downsized. Loved the running costs but couldn't live with the comfort or lack of from the Aygo. Plus 20k miles a year is a lot for a small engine. Think it's too much of a downsize personally.

Having driven both I prefer the Aygo over the Yaris, also driven the new Aygo and have to say I prefer the older one.

100% I'd miss the bigger car, needs must though. The Auris may be an option but I'm really looking around the £3,500 mark.

Circumstances might change again in 12months at which point I can pay the Aygo off and go back to an Avensis (not that there's anything wrong with an Aygo :)

It is a lot of miles for a little engine which was my concern, it's obviously only really designed for stop start city driving and not long periods at high revs on the motorway (although the chance would be a fine thing around the west midlands)

motorway driving is always better for a car as the car gets to working operating temperature

so your exhaust system will dry out ,your engine oil will protect better and being at a constant speed

will be good for fuel economy, short stop start driving around town and all the above go out of the window

i wouldn't be too bothered about it ,when we had our aygo motorway driving was ok, noise wasn't too intrusive

all things considered.

Well it's a jappy engine so it basically doesn't work until it hits high revs so I'm sure it'll be fine

I'd only really driven Ford petrols and a Yaris diesel before I first drove an Aygo and really hated it at first because I wasn't used to running up the revs, but the car just works soooo much better if you're not afraid to rev it. I swear the engine is actually smoother the faster it revs (Which is the opposite of my diesel Yaris )

The VVTi doesn't kick in until about 6000rpm anyway, right..? :naughty:

I normally get hoards of the little buggers flying past me on the motorway so the engine should be fine. TBH the only major annoyances of it are the road noise and seat comfort I felt.

(But it's really fun to drive :D Acceleration's a bit average but the launch is great and you can throw it round corners like a go-kart :naughty:)

Well I'm now a paid up member of the club.

White, 5dr 2012 Aygo.... Fire I think?, 19k miles, All the usual A/C, E/W, ABS, EBD, LED running lights, Heated mirrors, Privacy glass tint, it didn't have Sat-Nav but the main dealership are retro fitting it as an upgrade. I'd have liked the leather and Alcantara too but beggers can't be choosers I suppose. Had a bit of a rattle from the back box which they are meant to be sorting out.

we had bluetooth handsfree for your phone via the tomtom sat nav with the factory fitted

flip up tomtom system ,

tomtom connect i think it was called.

you will like your aygo

bluetooth would be nice if it has it, not sure what system they are fitting but they are a main dealer fitting genuine parts so I'd imagine it would be a factory fit of some description. There appears to be different systems, just happy to have sat-nav in a car of that class.

I love driving my Aygo on the motorway, despite people saying its just a city car it can lend itself to motorway driving pretty well. I pay about 80 odd pounds a month on petrol with a 30 mile daily commute to work and the once a month dog agility show trip. If you could afford one I'd suggest the new model Aygo personally as the seats are more comfortable. I've got a 2014 mk1 model and had to get a supportive seat back for it.

I found the comfort on the Mk 2 a lot worse than the first one. Car is ok up to 60 but anything over that it's too unrefined and underpowered for my taste. Fuel economy is top notch though :-) but prefer the comfort of a bigger car these days.

I've had both on loan each for a few days at a time as courtesy cars, and personally preferred the older model over the new one, I found the older one more comfortable but that's just me and everyone's different.

I thought it was a cracking little motor, loved it and almost bought the courtesy car off them there and then as a 2nd car. Which is why I've gone for one now.
