Hi guys the wifes Rav4 " Y reg 2001 2lt NRG 4x4 petrol" has just failed its MOT the Lamda sensor reading was 1.75 instead of 0.3 so I need to replace the sensor. Firstly which sensor do I replace and where is it? And if I get one off eBay how much should I be looking at paying and once replaced will the engine management light simply go out or does it need resetting?

If you get yourself a cheap code reader off eBay around £10 this is the one I have http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=181670410282&globalID=EBAY-GB you can plug that in and see what code is standing relating to which sensor, Google the code or look in the book you get with the reader and see which one it is, or ask on here, Will be bank 1 sensor 1 or something like that ,Then I would buy a denso sensor which has correct plug on, then its best if you have the correct socket for removing . But pull plug apart, unscrew and refit new one, start up and light will probably come on a few times until engine management recognise the new sensor, you then can reset the light with your cheap code reader.

Have done this a couple times with no problems, but buy a good quality sensor.

Hope this helps, if you book it into a garage you will be looking at around £150 I would think. Denso sensor approx £60-£70 . This is a good picture. http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=261220437928&globalID=EBAY-GB

Agree on branded sensor, however after 14 years it's going to take dismantling fluid, a blow torch and a decent extension bar combined with harsh language. It may be easier to replace the relevant section of exhaust.
