Hi,

My wife's car (2004 Toyota Corolla 1.4) blew the courtesy light bulb recently. I replaced it with an LED version. It appears that this was a big mistake as now the following don't work any more:-

  • central locking
  • radio
  • electric windows
  • and of course the courtesy light

I'm pretty hopeless with cars, DIY etc so I normally leave all this kind of thing to the professionals, but I reckoned even I could replace a bulb. Question is does anyone know what I've broken? I'm guessing it's not just a fuse, but something a little more serious. Assuming it is a little more serious does anyone know likely costs to fix?

Thanks in advance, Steve.

Have you checked the fuses?

Hi,

You have probably blown a fuse called DOME 15A.

Its not that difficult to replace if you are careful.

First remove the led bulb you fitted, its probably blown or unsuitable.

With the engine off, go in to the engine bay, just above the Battery you will see the long black fuse box cover.

Carefully remove it ( in the dry !) it may look similar to the diagram below but thats for a slightly different model.

Look on the underside of the lid you have just removed, moulded in are the fuse locations, so look for the DOME fuse.

Inside the fuse box there should be a plastic tool to help lift out the fuse and also there may still be some spare fuses as supplied.

With a 15A fuse replace the old on and see if that cures things.

DO NOT use a different Coloured / Amperage Fuse

If all ok get a proper bulb . and fuses if needed, from most auto shops, ensure the lamp switch is in the OFF position, fit the new bulb.

ANY DOUBTS , LEAVE IT AND CALL A GARAGE / CAR ELECTRICIAN.

( should just add that a led bulb must be fitted the right way around, if left in the wrong way it will not light, blow a fuse or short other things out, as you experienced)
