Kerb Climbing

Hi,

I occassionally have need to park my car on the grass, but between the grass and the driveway is a fairly large kerb of about 3 inches. In other cars I had no problem getting over it (carefully!) by just adding power until it goes over, but in my Yaris, it doesn't feel to want to step over. I'm not happy about applying a lot of power when static as I'm not sure what it is doing to the windings on the motor (I have visions of over-heating). I'm also not sure whether traction control is taking over (the drive wheels are on grass).

Note that the vehicle is square to the curb (both wheels on together) and the vehicle driven very slowly until contact is made - no ramming!

So far I have resorted to putting blocks (probably a better idea anyway) but is it safe to drive the car over such curbs from the point of view of the electrics?

I'm going to stick with the blocks thinking about it.

A little bit of momentum helps get it up the kerb without straining anything. My problem in exactly that situation is that when you back off again the rubber extension below the front bumper catches the kerb very slightly but this is enough to unclip the whole bumper and it's hard to get it to go back. It looks as if it's in danger of falling off altogether.

I`d recommend mixing a couple of buckets of gravel, sharp sand, rapid set cement and water.....leave it over night and used to make 2 ramps to drive up the kerbs.

Just give it more power, it's not doing this an easing off that's likly to cause motor issues. If the motor isn't enough then the power shift system should give it some direct drive to get you up and over.

It's no different to when moving up very steep hills and slow speeds (such as parking etc).

I've only done this once so far (it's something I rarely do).

Interesting about the engine. I figured if the motor didn't have the torque, then the engine wouldn't help. I'll try it next time.

Thanks! :)
