Adding Cruise Control

Hi,

My model year is T25 2004. Engine is 1AZ–FSE 2.0 VVT-i.

I read all the threads about it in this forum, but some of them are so old, the pictures

and links don't work anymore.

I ordered the switch from eBay, something like this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/201481541143

They all seem to have 2 wires red and black.

I saw some posts saying the red is ground but this is contrary to industry standard where black is usually used for ground.

Also, I'm not sure if the made in China ones, are the same color codes like the Toyota OEM ones.

So my first question is to anyone who has experience with these items, which wire is ground?

My second question is with the plug. Based on my car model, I should have all the needed wires ready.

So where do I connect the Red/Black to the plug in the steering wheel?

A simple pin x or pin y will not do, since I don't know which is which, so a picture or scheme would be of great help.

I want to get it right and not cause any damage to the ECU.

Thank you!

Also is your throttle body a cable or electronic one?

I don't think it is just plug n play with Avensis, at least no my model.

Can someone who did it confirm please?

How can I tell?

I gave the model on the first post, so I guess it is a know fact.

But does it make a difference for the CC installation?

Hi

I should mention that the cruise switch in your first post isn`t the correct one For Avensis, but it will do the job (it will be difficult to install). You must remove the two wires from your cruise switch plug, because it doesn`t fit your car and your car already has one. But do not damage the terminals on the wires, you`ll need them to fit your cars original plug.

You should check if your cruise system is working. Locate the engine ECU behind the glove box. In plug E11 pin 24 must be a white wire. Turn on ignition and briefly introduce ground to that pin, by doing that, your cruise control thinks it is turned on and cruise light on instrument panel lights up.

Will do.

But then, once verified, which one of the 2 wires black/red on the made in china CC is ground and which goes to ECU?

Look here, they all have the black and red wires:

On your steering wheel, there is one plug with 12 pins. On the lower row of that plug the most left wire is black (horn). After that you must install your red and then your black.

Henri, you are the best.

Your answers and help is simply great, I'm happy you are a member of the forum!

All is clear on what I need to do now.

Now, just to satisfy my curiosity, is the black ground on the made in china CC stalks?

OF course, if the answer is yes, then the red will be the one to connect to E11 - 24.

I was thinking of connecting it directly to the ECU, and grounding it, just for testing purposes, before I dismount the steering wheel.

Apologies for the wrong info on the plug n play I was thinking of an auris as I was thinking of putting it in mine!😕

Yes, black wire is ground and red wire goes to ECU. It`s a good idea to test the cruise switch first, let somebody drive and you will be at passenger seat to operate cruise control.

Remember to exchange the wires if the switch doesn`t work at first try, maybe they mixed up. Made in china

I installed the cruise control today, and everything works perfect.

The pictured helped a lot!

I can confirm that the red/black wires go exactly as Henri said.

Thank you Henri for the great help (another one :) ).

Dear Henri,

Could you please re-upload those images if you still have them?

I tried installing my Cruise Control using different forum, it didn't work out, but I noticed that guys there used a different 12 pin plan (maybe there are regional differences. still weird though)
According to their plan, number 1 is Horn, and number 2 and 3 are for Cruise Control. It worked for them but not for me. (As I understand it is slotted up side down in the wheel)
When I was disassembling my wheel I noticed that my Horn (black wire) goes to number 6
And now I saw your message and i think its starting to make sense for me 🙂

Thank you in advance!

Is getting cruise control active as simple as just fitting the stalk and connecting the wires?

Are no other parts required?  If it is I'm going to try it.

(The last cruise control I fitted was to a Ford Granada Mk1 and it needed all sorts of junk bolted on under the bonnet, strapped to drive shafts, and crimped to cables.)

Hi Joe, welcome to TOC ☺️

Which engine do you have as they are not all CC compatible?

p.s. maybe you can use the Big Rat to transfer knowledge to yourself ... 😜

Hello

I'm joining this thread rather late I know. I have just bought a 2009 Avensis (T27) with the 2ZR-FAE engine (1.8 VVTi) and automatic gearbox. Does anyone happen to know whether this engine is compatible?  Will it simply be a case of getting the wires correct?

2ZR-FAE is a Valvematic not VVTi. It should be compatible in fact I'm kind of surprised it doesn't have it. What trim level, T2?

Hi,

I have the same vehicle and same engine.
I simply bought a cruise control arm and installed it in the car.

Corresponding lights do not come up on dashboard, but otherwise it works perfectly.
Also these lights are not working using Techstream tests, so I suspect appropriate LEDs are not installed in dashboard.

...but as it works as it should, dashboard lights do not matter.

You need to push the button at the end of this arm, then you may set the speed by turning the arm down, cancel by pulling it, and turn up for the value previously set.
You need to turn on the fuction (with the button at the end of the arm) every time after the car restarted and it does not  turn on for speeds below 40 km/h (maybe around 25 mph).

So yes, it works in your car.
