Hi,

If the H/L flash ok, it kind of suggests the fault is in one of the two switches.

You really need a basic multimeter to check the switches are making contact, though expect they will take a bit of getting at.

You will have to be carefull of the steering wheel airbag system.

Have you searched for a wiring diagram for your model, expect there should be one in the Haynes manual.

https://haynes.co.uk/catalog/car-manuals/car-repair-manuals/toyota/toyota-corolla-petrol-july-97-feb-02-p-51

Have the later 2002-on manual but there are a lot of variations, so you need a UK spec diagram.

I have the same problem and I suspect with the same model car, but I just do not get it, how by replacing the foglamp switch does that restore the headlights to working again, when they are a separate circuit according to The Haynes manual, unless of course you have a short circuit where the juice runs along another wire,.Can you explain what I am obviously missing here please.

Thanks for the reply, much appreciated. Tell me please did your fog light switch work as a fog light light switch, in other words did it switch on your foglights before this headlight problem surfaced?.I now notice having checked my foglight switch that it does not work, to be frank I would never have even thought to look at this, but you may well have a point here, the Haynes manual does not bear this out though,as they show two separate wiring diagrams which would evidentially point to two separate problems. However I'm going to try this you mention, tell me how much is a new foglight switch from Toyota?.

Another fix for headlight failure as Old Codger indicates is a lighting switch [the indicator arm ], this can be a  problem. The fix is to fit another arm, [ the lighting part of these are not serviceable however the indicator part is]. The whole arm    is commonly known as a stalk and again as Old Codger says one must be very careful when removing the steering wheel as it houses the airbag, been there and done that, its half hours job remembering to disconnect the Battery negative cable and follow the Haynes manual otherwise the airbag may well activate, and sadly for me  it wasn't the problem after all.

No it stopped when my headlights stopped but what I did notice was some times my fog lights would turn on when I had just my sidelights on which I thought was weird lol when the switch went I had sidelights front and rear full beam no dipped beam and no fog lights I took the switch out of my mates car plugged it in and bam working fine the switch from Toyota was £64+vat I got raped for that but I needed it 😳

Hmmm, Strange all this carry on isn't it, I will put this fog light switch right first and then see what, if anything develops. Just a thought, but mindful of what you say, had anyone that you know of, yourself included, meddled with the lighting taking it out or adding to it  putting on after market things such as additional front fog lighting and utilising the same fog lamp switch so picking up the live from the headlamp set up, or is it just as it came from Toyota?. Raped yep that would not be too strong a word for it, that is a lot of money for one tiny switch. Have you had much else go wrong with this motor ?
