Heater Control Illumination Avensis 1.8 2004

Has anyone got any knowledge of the heater control illumination on 2004 Avensis, illumination is fine upper dashboard, and radio cd area, just the three dial that control A/C heater and direction of air. It shows in the pdf manual that there are four bulbs in the rear of the heater control panel, but haven't been able to access them! Can't imagine that all four bulbs could have blown! Is there a fuse just for these lights? Any help would be appreciated.

Yes the bulbs are expensive I paid I think around £6 or so for 1 bulb..I would do all the usual checks before spending on the bulbs.mine had a dirty contact and had just 1 bulb to change rather than them all.its a bit time consuming to change but it is an easy job bit of dash trim ash tray remove and radio.

It's worth going to a scrapyard or breaker if there are any in your area that have an Avensis or pretty much any Toyotas because the bulbs are pretty universal across the range.I replaced the bulbs in my heater display in my previous Avensis, a W reg 1.8 GS because half the heater control panel was illuminated and half dull...... my current one is going the same way.

I've tended to keep bolts, fixings, bulbs, relays and other bits n pieces from all the cars I've owned or stripped over the years and found some that fit nicely though haven't a clue what kind of car they came from lol

To change the bulbs...

Remove the long thin dash trim piece which houses the rear window demister button and cupholders. It simply pulls off towards you, start at the far passenger end.

Pull the gear lever surround section off, all the way from the front of the armrest up to just under the ashtray. It simply pulls off upwards, use a plastic spatula or similar at the rear if it won't budge easily. You don't need to actually remove it, once loose you can maneuvre it out your way.

From there you can access four 10mm bolts holding the complete radio and heater control panel in place. Best tool is a socket on an extension.

Then it appears the radio comes away from the heater section, but I couldn't work it out for the life of me. I did, however, manage to change the bulbs by loosening the appropriate screws. There was a thread a while ago where someone had similar troubles but managed to get the two apart. IIRC the OP was trying to change the heater controls if it helps with the search function.

Hope this helps :)
