2007 Corolla Verso - Gearbox Rebuild Cost?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone else had this done and if so, what did you pay? Have been quoted £1100 by Toyota and around £600 + parts by an independent mechanic. I had the clutch and DMF replaced Feb last year (£££s) and was hoping that would be the end of the clutch-slipping problem. However, it's now slipping again and the problem appears to be a gearbox oil seal, which requires a rebuild. Toyota mechanic says this is a known issue with this model (D4D, 170PS engine). I'm planning on selling this car soon anyway so want this latest expense to be as cheap as possible. Mileage is c120,000, mostly motorway miles.

Wonder how the Verso gearbox is different to the old Avensis and standard Corolla gearboxes ?

Have been told by a couple of garages over the years, that the crankcase or gearbox input shaft seals are known to leak but that they were an easy £5 job to replace while fitting a new clutch.

Would seem odd to have to strip a whole gearbox to replace that input shaft seal or strip out the crank shaft for its output oil seal ..?

Back in the day we used to fix an oil-contaminated slipping clutch by getting someone in the drivers seat to keep the clutch pedal pressed down, the engine idling and empty a CFC fire extinguisher inside, either through an access plate or through the slot where the clutch fork operated. That dried it all out and let the clutch work again sometimes for a couple of months.

Maybe you could try it with a couple of aerosols of brake cleaner or the like, anything that's a solvent and will evaporate away. It's worth a try, especially if you intend to get rid of it.

Forgot to say, you have not mentioned about any signs of oil leakage on the underside of the bell / clutch housing?

On my old Avensis there was a constant trace of oil coming out, abeit very slow, but never any clutch slip.

Well, two replies so far (thanks) but no answers. Anyone?
