Vibrating At Speed?

Hi guys, my 07 t2 seems to vibrate through the seat and steering wheel when I'm above 60mph and is accompanied by a a rumbling. It's not bad but thought I best check if anyone else had it?

wheels balanced?

Steering Wheel judder at or above specific speeds are usually due to incorrect wheel balance. Have you swapped the front wheels around? Possibly a wheel lead balance weight may have dropped.

Rumbling at all speeds but increasing in volume with speed is generally worn wheel bearings. These two problems may be linked but not necessarily so. Grumbling is difficult to pinpoint and you may need an assistant to pin down to identify which corner is noisy.

Thanks guys, bizarrely it's not noticeable on rougher road surfaces?

rough road surface probably also increases tyre noise so you don't hear the rumbling against it.

I am sure that you know that you shouldn't really mix tyres on an axle.

If the vibration is coming up through the drivers seat it is more than likely a rear wheel/tyre is at fault. What concerns me is you might have a carbuncle on the rear tyre and that is very dangerous. I very much suggest you have the wheels balanced and if you do have a defective tyre the man balancing the dodgy tyre will see it.....so prepared to buy a new tyre.

I had a similar problem although, in my case, the rumbling/vibration was occurring at around 30mph. Eventually diagnosed as a misshapen rear tyre (vertically misshapen). Quite easy to diagnose by jacking the car up, spinning each wheel in turn and watching for vertical displacement. Had to change both rear tyres which were three years old.

UPDATE: taken the old girl in and got her checked and I'm so glad I did...

One tyre was 8 years old with the other 6 and both had warped with one having the wire coming through on the inside. I've known the tyre fitter for some years and he said I wasn't leaving until the tyres were changed!

Thanks for the advice guys, I feel like I've dodged a bullet given the mileage I do
