54' Avensis 2.0 Auto Won't Stay In Drive ?

Hello from a new member.

Wanted a bit of tech advice, my partners' '54 plate Avensis 2.0 VVTi Auto won't stay in drive. When you put it into drive the car won't move unless you apply pressure on the lever towards the rear, then it will move and work fine but you obviously can't drive around holding the lever like that.

The local garage have had it for three days and decided to change the gearbox oil, for which I've just had a bill for £100 and told 'see if that makes any difference, if not it's £2000 for a new gearbox'.

I'm not happy with their diagnoses and bill and wondered if there's anything known that causes this sort of problem so I can get a second opinion. The car's not worth much but we like it and it's got all the toys on it so we'd like to hang on ideally.

Any thoughts ?

Thanks

No knowledge myself of auto boxes, but I'm wondering if there is/are some electrical switches/components linked to the lever, and something has gone astray/moved/misbehaving. Certainly on some other makes of car, inhibitor switches can lurk beneath the centre consol. To my mind, the clue is in the fact that it works fine when pressure's applied to the lever.

The change of oil has probably given the box an extended life :)

Check out the cables, if they're stretched or out of adjustment the selector at the gearbox might not be properly in drive.
