Hi,

Fallen in love with the estate. There is no difference in MPG OFFICIALLY on autotrader for two body type (estate and hatchback/saloon). BUT I find that hard to believe. I am talking about manual gearbox. If you could let me know the real MPG around town and on a long drive A roads or motorways if you own an estate, I shall be very grateful.

Regards,

Waqar

Come on Konrad Fess Up. I know you own one. :). I just wanna get a rough idea about how far away from the official mpg is the real mpg.

I don't see there being a huge difference between estate to hatchback. I owned an 05 plate 1.8vvti manual hatch and could get between 34 and 54 mpg depending on whether I was kicking it on or not. General average driving on average roads at average speeds you'll probably get about 40.

HonestJohn's RealMPG says 40 but again doesn't discriminate between hatch/saloon/estate. There won't be a big difference though ( maybe 0.5-1.0 mpg).

Waqar I own a Mk3 estae and average 35 mpg, but after say 250 - 280 miles can only fill up 30 litres. The most I have filled up on the Tourer is 45 litres and did close to 400 miles. That would put it close to 40 mpg. All I know is that the range say 400 miles remaining when full tank. I think the on-board computer needs recalibrating.

I am driving both my cars so takes a long time to use the fuel. Most of my driving is around South London, Kent, Sussey with the odd journey to Sussex.

The Mk2 should be similar and yes the estate is heavier. Once the car is moving, then the momentum overcomes the weight difference.

Let's say i go far on petrol and never worry too much.

Remember that the range doesn't countdown to empty but to "reserve" which is ~9-10 litres. Typical Toyota caution.

Estate cars traditionally used the van rear axle (for rear wheel drive) or the lower final drive ratio (front wheel drive) because they are expected to carry heavier loads than the saloon. I don't know what the specs say for the Avensis, anyone know?

Luton is not too far, as we have bought 3 cars along the M1 corridor. On the flip side, I bought my Mk3 locally. Look at the car not the seller first. It will tell you more about the seller as well as finding faults. Some sellers don't have a clue on the cars they are selling.

The reserve on my tank feels more like 20 litres! At least the economy seem fine.

I have searched for info on gearbox and final drive, but have found nothing specific to estates. So if in the future a gearbox swap is needed, only one covers all. Remember the car has 6 gears which cover most situations, when in back in the day cars only had 4 gears to play with. Modern engines are more flexible, so combined with the extra gears, reduces the cost of manufacturing specific transmissions for specific models. My car shows an indicated 70 mph at 2500 rpm, on the larger 215/55 tyres on 17" wheels. These wheels are larger than the lesser T2 spec, so my gearing is slightly longer.

That estate looks very good. I see your point about the distance.
