Yaris Mk 2 Boot Lock Jammed & Drive Belt Screeching

Hi guys, just joined the Yaris club and picking up car later today. 55 plate, mk2, 1.3 VVT-i T3 5door

After viewing yesterday the boot would not open.

The key fob has the central locking buttons but would not work and also tried the key but still no luck.

The lock button has also been pressed in, no spring action, does not bounce back.

Tried DWD 40, sprayed on key and lock but still wouldn't budge.

It opened briefly but it was still half locked, the guy just closed it again and wouldn't open. Not sure why he did that but hoping it will eventually open. Whats the next step guys?

Also I take it there is no boot lever? Couldn't find one

Also screeching from drivebelt. Done 82k. Hoping its just loose and required tightening. If so, whats the cost?

Oh, and one of the light covers is foggy/cloudy. Any tips to sort it out?

Hello John - welcome to Toyota Owners Club

As regards the headlights, it could be either condensation on the inside or the plastic lenses have clouded with age. There are various methods one can use to improve the lenses, from toothpaste to a specialist kit - see http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/topic/146892-headlight-cleaning/?hl=%2Bcleaning+%2Bheadlight+%2Blenses#entry1268363

I think it's clouded from outside but will have a closer look tomorrow. Got bigger issues with a 2nd noise coming from the engine and boot lock. Going garage tomorrow and fearing the worst.

Apparently the toothpaste trick is only temporary, the cloudiness will come back. Also from researching and viewing link above, the UV coating has gone and the toothpaste will only take more off. Then the cloudiness will be back. It's important to reapply coating, perhaps every 6months or so. Just need to find a good restorer kit.

There is a variety of kits available on Amazon at various prices - search Amazon for 'headlight restorer'

Thanks for the replies. While I was at the garage the mechanic recommended to rub sponge with the rough side and toothpaste. If it works just need to order a uv spray to apply.

Got bad news on the lock, the motor has gone and another part, probably set me back £100 if not more with labout, especially if I need another lock and key.

The screeching noise was water pump being faulty, bearings had gone and was very wobbly, cost £100 to replace with labour, apparently should expect it to fail every 2 years depending on mileage.

So much for reliability, my dads peugeot lasts longer! Pretty disgusted with Toyota they can't make such an important component last.

It is a 10 year old car.

Who told you that? It's not something that I have picked up on here as a common fault. In fact the Yaris regularly is considered to be 1 of the most reliable cars that you can buy (having said that as Frosty says it is a 10 year old car & by the sound of things not one that has been well looked after).

Did you buy the car from a private individual or from a trader? If the latter then they would be legally required to fix at least the water pump (& I would have a crack at them about the rest - "sold as seen" hasn't existed for several years from commercial traders under consumer legislation).
