Should I Change My Belt

Good Evening All.

I have had a few people ask me recent...has the belt been changed...on our recently aquired 2010 2.0 diesel with 62k on the clock...its got me thinking since they seem to think its dire important that i change it...do i need to? I mean, the belt looks absolutely fine...no cracks or marks or worn edges etc...its a bit dull i suppose...so i dont know, plus with the recent extended warranty purchased i dont know if its a good idea to play around with things.

In the past, we have always normally changed the belt within weeks of buying a car, at under 20.00 a belt its fine, however, i know Toyota will eventually recommend that they change it...at a cost of 250.00+...its crazy, and something my other half can do himself! But if we do change it, will Toyota eventually want to change it again further down the line or do they go by its condition?

Im confused.com guys, any input appreciated, thanks!

Check the ribbed side for small cracks, use a small mirror if necessary.

I think that they probably mean the cambelt - except that it's a chain-drive on that engine .... :P

Hi

Thank you for your input lads.

Checked the ribbed side and smooth side...no small cracks...saying that ill check it again...with our heavy windy weather at the moment i dont fancy being under a bonnet right now!

Heidfirst, i am certain...they mean the drive belt...or aux belt...unless it has another name i dont know of!!! People seem to worry about this belt on dirsels for some reason, a mate just bought himself a Lexus is 220d...first thing he did was change the drive belt!!!

Can't think why (or at least more so than on a petrol)? :confused1:

Now cam/timing belt failure is of course an entirely different matter (at least if it isn't a non-interference engine & diesel tend not to be that due to higher compression so less space in head)!!! Belts are usually due ~60,000 miles but (properly manufactured & maintained) chains go on ...

For what they cost, for peace of mind i would just get your other half to change the Auxillary belt 20 min job tops.
