Hi All

I am new to all this , but yesterday my normal sounding Corolla Verso 2.2d4dT180 starting sounding like the propellers on a Spitfire at startup, basically a large ticking sound which on investigation appears to be coming from the top of the engine and is in actual fact exhaust gases. I had to put the heater on recirculate as it was coming in the cab. Any ideas what it could be and is it normally an expensive fix?

Thanks for any replies  Gary

Hi,
Probably the exhaust manifold has a hole / crack or its gasket has blown.

A gasket quiet cheap, but needs some labour to get those high temperature/rusty parts off.

One for a garage unless you are handy ..?

Had anything done to the exhaust or engine recently ?

Hi oldcodger

I've had no work done recently , ironically I was hoping to  swap it as I thought it was getting to the time when things will start to go wrong and the fact that the intermittent plumes of smoke that it chucks out are getting more frequent.

I've just been outside and took a photo of where the gases appear to come from .

Either way I think its going to be expensive!!!

how is the coolant & oil level?

Oil and coolant levels  are fine.

OK, just checking - there is a known head/headgasket issue which manifests in a small % of that series of engines with the T180 appearing to be the most prone.

If you're getting an external leak there it could be one of  your fuel injector sealing washers is blowing.
