2003 toyota avensis verso 2.0 petrol - engine management system

Hello,

I have a 2003 Toyota avensis verso 2.0 petrol engine car. The engine management light has been on for several months but it drives fine. I did get it checked and they said something about some kind of sensor (sorry I am not a mechanic). It is due its MOT in March 2016 and I wondered if it had to be fixed or the light off before it would get through an MOT. Also, can these sensor problems cause any other engine problems. It really drives ok for a car of its age. Any help/advice welcome.

Hello,

My guess is its your o2 sensor. Depends on what the code is really. Mostly one should sort these things out as there is always a long term effect. But having said that O2 sensors are like £60 a pop. Now thats not cheap in my book. If it is the o2 sensor, your car will not know when it should adjust the fuel mixture. Dont worry you wont notice much as when these things go, they have a default setting to fall back on. I would recomment that you get it sorted. (I have assumed that its your o2 because almost all other sensors will cause car to let the driver know that something was up). Definitive answer when you tell us the code.

Regards,

Waqar

You can buy an OBD2 scanner either online (Amazon/eBay) or from places like Halfords, Machine Mart, etc.

Some garages may not charge much, but others may charge you £50 just to diagnose. If it is a sensor, some garages may reduce the cost if they fix the fault too!

If you get your own OBD2 diagnostics, it will work on most petrol cars made from 2001. I say most because later cars have more functions that are not covered. Diesels are covered from 2003.

As Waqar has said, come back once you know the fault - which is likely to be an O2 sensor.

Here is a link to a posting which details a similar fault to yours:
