Toyota Yaris General Rear Lights query

Hi,

I recently realized I had no rear tail lights when driving home from work after a chap pulled alongside me and let me know. Upon replacing these bulbs I came to realize they share the same unit as the brake light bulbs and so i'm guessing I would of had neither brake or tail lights whilst driving. At the minute, my tail lights illuminate when the lights are on, and become "brighter" when the brake is applied signifying a brake. but i wanted to ask about the layout of the Yaris light as to be honest i thought they would of been separate and a tail light would of been completely separate to a rear brake light.. 

 

Sorry this probably sounds completely stupid but its my first car and im just ensuring I fully understand that I have done it properly!

It is quite common for the tail light and brake light to share the same bulb, which would have twin filaments - one 5 watt filament for the tail light and a 21 watt filament for the brake light.

Legally cars have to have a red reflector at the rear in addition to the rear !lights -  this is what the area you have asked about is.
