2002 avensis D4-D with absolutely no power.

Car has always been serviced well and on time, new oil and filters all round in December but there is no power anymore, car starts first time every time, never stalls but refuses to accelerate like it used to. Any suggestions where to start? If you need more info just ask

Can you rev it. If so normally or limited.

Also do you have your check engine light on?

Do you know any fault codes?

When sitting in neutral I can Rev the car as hard as I like but once on the road it struggles to reach 3000 rpm.

No lights at all and no fault codes.

Gearbox and clutch are excellent, drive shafts were replaced a year and a half ago so I shouldn't think there would be damage.

the fuel filter was a little dirty but I've seen far worse (replaced it anyway) and prior to oil and filter change it was burning a little oil but not now

Some time ago my 1999 Avensis (still going strong) started intermittently to not have so much power on accelaration, then it started to stop, again intermittently,  without warning when going in to car parks and at traffic lights ie when I slowed down. Following several visits by the AA and trips on a low loader to the garage, when each time it started ok, and the mechanic could not find any faults on the computer and no warning lights etc, the problem was eventually resolved when the glovebox was taken out and found that the wires to the injectors had a loose connection intermittently affecting the power to the injectors. This may not help but as it was a power puzzle and it eventually got solved in the last place the mechanic could think of looking, I thought to mention it to you!

Although the computer could not find my fault, as it was intermittent, my partner suggest the computer at a Toyota dealer should be able to find your fault as it is constant.

I'll have a look at that thanks! Is it much of a job to get to the EGR valve? I'm sure it's overdue a clean, (hasn't been touched since the car was bought in 08 and probably wasn't touched before that)

OK from your original post, I gathered that you couldnt move the vehicle at all.

So as it stands ATM, your car is in limp mode. i would definitely recommend looking at EGR valve (normally this would have triggered a fault code), failing that I would look at SCV (suction control valves). There are posts about that here somewhere. AND I dont think that these trigger a fault code directly relevant to them.

Hi James.

Have a look at some of these You Tube clips, they will probably help you about cleaning your EGR valve and incidentally it was the first thing I thought of.

Cleaned the EGR, was completely blocked and wouldn't move but it's freed up now and spotless but hasn't made a difference to performance, car blew out a lot of black smoke when revved but what should I check next?

Gave the car a good drive and a bit of life came back into it but it's still not great

Hi James, thee are 2 products on the marker, Archoil in various forms.. https://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=archoil  (Hope you can open it ok) and generally it's the top bottle that is used, or something else called BG244 .. https://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=BG244&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3ABG244 (Again hope you can open it ok, let us know if you can't and we'll try another way).

Anyway some people use one of the products and others the other one, either way buying a bottle of either one or even the multi buy packs won't do you any harm and may be an easy way to sort out your problem, no promises but just read the reviews and decide for yourself.

Good luck, Mike.

Car has lost power again, is it possible some crap came loose and made it to the EGR valve again?

This was the egr before I cleaned it. Valve was completely stuck but it's free now, opened it after 100 miles just to see and it was spotless.

passenger side engine mount was broken several months ago and the car burnt or moved a lot of oil because there was some oily residue leading into the turbo. Is it possible that the throttle body could be blocked up? Seen a lot of videos/photos of throttle bodies full of carbon

Yeah, usually it's the throttle body that is the problem - the EGR and turbo intercooler feed into it and it also gets sootier than an entire season of the Sooty Show.

On my Yaris D4D, as soon as the throttle body channel that goes to the EGR starts getting blocked up with soot the car won't idle smoothly any more and I have to pop it out and blast the crap out of with carb cleaner. (Not had to do it in a couple of years now tho' since I've been abusing the revs a lot more :naughty: )

This is my fathers car and he's always been much fonder of revving the engine whereas I was trying to get as many miles out of it as I could in an effort to save money,. I'll drive it a little harder from now on.

Mext question is where is the throttle body on the 2.0 avensis?

I'm expecting it to be filthy

BG244, some good diesel and drive it hard for a few miles. Made a fair difference to my 2.2 D4D which had little power in 1st or 2nd

Turbo was leaking and it built up in the intercooler which lead to gradual power loss. Replaced the intercooler and the car is going like a rocket. Anyone know where I can get new seals for it? IHI VB6 is the turbo model.
