Whining at speed?

Hi all, my 1.8 petrol t25 t2 has starting whining at speed, gets louder the faster you go. Any ideas? Was thinking drive shafts? Still does it if you knock it out of gear

Hi Thorn,

Does the noise get louder when you turn left or right? If so then I would suspect a wheel bearing. If not, I would suspect transmission, either diff or gearbox. If the noise abates after driving fit a while it could even be tyres, for example an old tyre that's gone hard.

No doesn't change when steering and still does it when the clutch is down...I'll go diff then...any idea on price?

Rather than try to diagnose and repair by replacing parts why not get a specialist to have a look at it?  It might cost a little but if you change the diff, which I believe is integral to the gearbox, and the problem persists then the money was wasted.

It can be very difficult to diagnose whining noises on FWD cars because noise can travel and appear to be coming from the opposite side where the trouble lies. What did your mechanic say, did he think it might be the opposite side wheel bearing?

It's a regular scam in the car market, auctioneer will say "It just needs a wheel bearing" and you wind up changing whole transmissions.

It could be the diff carrier bearings or the pinion bearings since you say it still does it when you knock it out of gear. If it was crown wheel and pinion gear teeth you'd expect it to whine either on drive or overrun. Wot mileage you got?

When I had the failed transmission a couple of years back, the fault is hard to trace. I had replace the wheel bearings a few years back, plus the noise was different. I also have had the tyre noise that is similar to a wheel bearing sound. 

When the transmission bearing sounds begin, it is quiet at first, but after a short time, the noise increases depending on the use of the car. 

It is just a matter of confirming and then fixing the fault. That is not cheap unless you source a secondhand transmission with no issues.

Right update...had the wheels off on the passenger side last night; no movement in either wheel when jacked up but did find a seriously ruined rear disc...the saga continues!https://vimeo.com/158300007

A worn disc shouldn't whine, if anything it should grind.  The loose 'left/right' movement you show in the last seconds of the video is normal and won't be there when the wheel is bolted on, since the disc is held tight 'sandwiched' between the hub studs and the wheel..

Also, and I know this isn't really any help to you, but around 2012-2013 I had a tidy 55 plate T25 1.8 auto with a whine (so it wasn't far off the age yours is now).  I bought it at 22k miles with the whine and sold it around 30k still with the whine.  It passed two MOT's, and I specifically told the second guy to look for something.  I could never tell whether the noise came from the front or rear.  I thought it might be the el-cheapo tyres on the front, but I changed them to the original factory spec tyres (which were also fitted to another previous T25 I owned, which was quiet), but it made no difference.  I also fitted new discs and pads all round due to a wobble when braking.  I reckoned it shouldn't be wheel bearings due to it's low mileage and the fact there was no play or noise/grinding when rotating the wheels.  I had eliminated the brakes, so my next port of call was changing random wheel bearings, or something to do with transmission, or selling it...which is what I did.

Thanks Alan333, had it back in at the garage today, had new rear discs both sides and a new drivers side wheel bearing and....it's fixed! £180 well spent!!
