Hi gang,

My little Lola has a slight misfire at 1400-160rpm which is at a nice cruising speed in top gear so I can feel it most of the time. She is also VERY rattley when cold but normal when the temperature gauge starts to move.

Any ideas where I should start looking? I thought maybe some injector cleaner additive in the fuel or is that not a good idea?

She's a 2004 2.0 D4D with 120000miles on her.

Thanks,

Bod.

Sounds as if it could be faulty injector(s) so I'd try a bottle of injector cleaner in it for a start. If it doesn't work you can just park it up and use that lovely 1977 Capri GL instead - piece of Dagenham class!

Could be soot build up in throttle body or EGR... also, when was the timing belt last changed?

Injector cleaner now and then is always a good idea unless you run the engine hot regularly; It's why a few of us use things like V-Power diesel, as that has a lot of cleaning agents to try and stop crap building up in the fuel system

Another possibility is one of the sensors (e.g. the MAF) is a bit marginal or needs cleaning?

Thanks very much both of you. I'll pop some injector cleaner in today to start with. The belt was changed in the Autumn and she gets a run (for run, see kicking) down the motorway everyday for about 8 miles. I use V-power in my Rav all the time but never in Little Lola. I don't know why not, but I will from now I think.

The MAF sensor was replaced yesterday as I managed to break the old one when cleaning it back in the Autumn.Maybe that's the issue. The fact that I've been running with a broken MAF for a while and things have sooted up while it's been running on the default Mapping.

I'll check the throttle body later but the EGR is a bit of a pig to do as you need to drain the coolant to get it off.

Well I'll start with the little things first and let you know how I get on.

Cheers,

Bod.

EGR now cleaned,  two bottles of injector cleaner, two tanks of v-power, fuel filter replaced tonight and I pulled each injector plug off in turn as you would with HT leads and nothing was evident. Each unplug had the same effect.

Had a bit of an issue with tick over tonight as soon as I started it at work to come home which is why I went straight to MrT and got the fuel filter.

Anyway, the same problems still remain. Loud tap all the time when it's cold right through the rev range and tick over and really lumpy at 1600 rpm.

I can only think it's now injectors? What else can it be?

Diagnoses confirmed. Number 1 injector unserviceable with 2,3&4 not far behind. MrTs estimate was, wait for it--------£1496+vat..

Little garage round the corner £1000 as long as all is well getting the injectors out and any other unforseen issues.

So I'm afraid it's bye bye Lola. It's been a long and good friendship but the time has come for us to part ways.
