Sold my Mk1 but still have my Mk3

Today I sold my Mk1 leanburn 1998 Avensis. It has served me well, but I need to cut back. My friend wanted it so he gave me £200. I also got £325 from the other party insurance, after a lady reversed into the offside rear. The repair was on a buff to remove the marks. The tax expires tomorrow, so save on that too.

I have my Mk3 1.8 Tourer which I hardly used. Might as well use it more.

The last thing I did with the Mk1 was change the side bulbs back from LED yesterday. During the change, I did not put the bulb in the holder properly, and it fell in to the headlamp unit. Had to remove the headlamp, which was quite easy apart from unplugging the main connection, which is tight on the main loom near the Battery. The bulb fell out easily, so put it in the holder and made sure it was secured. Headlamp back on the car in a jiffy.

For those who need to change or fix the headlights on a Mk1 Avensis, first remove the front indicator by using a flat bladed screw driver on a tab, accessed through a hole behind the lights, from above. The remove the single screw securing the grill and remove that. Remove 2 screws at the top of the headlamp and 1 at the front, that was covered by the grill. Pull the piece of colour coded trim below headlight by pulling it from the screw position, and press a tag at the other end, to release it from the wing. Then pull the headlamp forward to release it from the car.

I wish all cars are as straightforward as this. I will test the LED on my Mk3 to see if they work.

I will miss the Mk1 but have a lot of good memories and photos.

Hi Konrad - sorry to hear that your Mk1 has gone - I expect you were sorry to see it go. I shall miss your excellent posts on the Mk1 - I've found them really useful over the years. Hope your Mk3 is as good and reliable as the Mk1 - I'm still planning on keeping mine for a while yet.

I was sorry to see my first T25 go too Konrad, especially when I often saw it around for the first couple of years.  But onwards and upwards...  Just think how much your friend really wants your T27 ;)

Yes, you are right about my friend liking the Tourer. It would cost him a hell of a lot more. I have to move on and cut back.

I have a lot of info on the Mk1 and can still offer advice, so will still answer questions when possible.

I think the Mk1 is a brilliant car, which did everything I wanted. Just could justify running two cars right now. I am sorry to let it go after 13 years.

I notice you sold your car to a friend Konrad and that's about one of the worst things you can do. Speaking from experience I've found that friends expect you to look after every little thing that comes up when you sell them a car and you can get very fed up looking at "your" old car.

You are right Tom, but this friend goes to his mechanic so should be know problem. I had it before with another car, but the girls boyfriend who is a mechanic told her, it is nothing to do with me.

You will hear about it.

They have the handbook for reference.

Hi Konrad,

Well I suppose it was going to have to happen one day.Onward and upward. It is good that your Mk 1 was sold as a runner to hopefully continue for a while yet.

It is good to know you will be keeping an eye out for posts about Mk 1. Last weekend a thread you had contributed to helped  me. I was changing the interior light bulb with a new bulb that happened to be faulty which blew the dome fuse. That left me without central locking as well as no interior lights and a clock that only kept time when the engine was running or ignition on. After looking at the handbook, the Haynes and the listings of fuses on the back of the coin tray I was none the wiser.

A quick Google and a read of a thread from way back on this forum I knew I needed a new fuse of 7.5a to go in the under bonnet fusebox in the location listed as dome. Brilliant, job done.

I hope you love your new Avensis as much as the Mk 1. I shall carry on with my Mk 1 but I fear it will be rust on the underside that kills it, I needed a sill welding for the last MOT.

Steady up there Matt, por todos esos elogios que está recibiendo, a Konrad se le están subiendo los humos a la cabeza.

Tom you joker. I won't challenge your superior brain. Credit where credit is due, you know more than me. If my head got too big, someone will slap me down.

Thanks to the translator.
