Yaris 1.8sr System management light on :-/

Hi guys, my Yaris system management light has been coming on for a few months now & not sure why.

It can be off & out of the blue it comes back on no matter what speed I'm doing or even parked.

The car seems to lose a little power when it comes on & sort of shoots forward like if the fuel is not getting threw correctly & the car vibrates when parked.

In truth would have had it checked earlier, but lack of money has stopped me taking it in to Toyota.

Any ideas what the problem could be ?

Welcome Gary

Could be a sticking EGR valve...which is easy to fix remove . clean , replace.. (I assume it has an EGR valve)..

You need to have someone read the fault codes.. I have a fault code reader but 200 miles away

I'm actually in North lanarkshire (Glasgow) so more than 200 miles away :-(

I'm not sure if it has EGR as I don't even know what that means.

The customer service girl at my local Toyota dealers said a diagnostic test would cost between £50 & £98. I asked her what price again & she repeated between £50 & £98.I left the counter confused lol.

My previous car threw up an EML (Engine Management Light) and local garages wanted fifty-odd quid to read the codes, but no-one could do it for a week!

I went and bought a code reader for fifteen quid - one of these, I see they're now cheaper: http://tinyurl.com/zsc4eyw

It told me the crankshaft position sensor was out of tolerance. A new one cost me thirty quid.

An overall saving, a bit of dirt under my fingernails from changing it and it's been borrowed often.

Son-in-law bought an even cheaper one: http://tinyurl.com/grc5j5p

They give you live engine data, revs, temperature and such stuff, but you need a blue-tooth enabled device. I'm not that modern.

If you're not confident wielding a spanner, then I'm afraid you're at the mercy of garages.

A guy in my work tried his code reader when the EML was on,but it came back with no codes :-/

In truth I know very little about stripping cars, but I'm not shy to try things.

I strip computers, laptops & mobile phones so do have some skills with a screwdriver, but not a spanner.

It looks like Toyota for a fix,but still don't understand how it can be between £50 & £98. They must have a set price so will ask them again as it makes no sense.

Suppose it may depend on how long the diagnostic takes.

I thought it only took minutes to look for faults & bring up a code :-/

It may do - if that is all they do. Don't forget average labour rates for garages is around £75 per hour, so with a charge of £50-98, you're probably looking at a maximum of between 40 and 80 minutes labour, depending what they do.

Think about white goods service . There is a callout charge of £50 - £70. A garage is similar.

(I do free callouts for bee swarms but charge £20 callout to cover petrol and deter idiots wasting my time)

White goods service include the call out charge in the price of fixing the item, but a garage is charging me £50-£98 just to find the problem & then charging me again once they fix the problem not taken in to account they have already charged me £50-£98, so not the same.

business is business, so I will just take the plunge.............

If you think a business employing skilled labour and expensive equipment is going to charge a lot less, you are labouring under a serious misapprehension..

I'm not sure what post says I have a problem paying the extra money, but let's not be fooled that it's not an easy way to make extra money from a customer.

Lot's of places including garages will check stuff for you & then charge you a price if you want it fixed. Lot's of Computer shops offer "No fix no fee".

If Toyota do the diagnostic test then as I've said (it's a fair point) they could add that test money in with the bill, but if I get them to do the test & I go elsewhere to get the problem that needs fixed then it's only fair they charge me for the diagnostics test.

It should not be all about how much you can make from a customer & sometimes to keep customers on your side & gain more customers is to give a little back in return.

Even places like the Apple shop will check your iPhone, tablet or laptop for free & then tell you the problem & if you want it fixed.

Charging customers a diagnostic or investigation fee is common practice in the motor industry across all marques, whether that is an independent or a main dealer. If it turns out to be a warranty issue, some will then waive the fee.

If you're not happy with the fee, then go elsewhere.

Not all garages charge a fee to find a fault on your car.

As already said,I don't actually have a problem paying the fee.

I'm sure/confident a lot of garages would wave the diagnostics fee if it was a major fault & they got offered the job to fix it.

Found out what the fault was & was going to buy the part on eurocarparts, but as it says "B" does it matter what coil I use as I'm guessing A,B & C are all the same coils ?

I have learnt that in critical areas like ignition, I would only use Denso. You can buy the other brand, but keep the receipt safe in case the fault comes back.

The second fault may be cause by the coil pack problem. Before spending any money, you did check the spark plugs? I had a "friend" who had issues with misfire on a Vauxhall Meriva, and after plugging my diagnostics kit, thought it was the coil pack. I asked a couple of questions about servicing, which came back none, so decided to look at the spark plugs. They were well passed sell buy date, and the insulators were totally burnt. New plugs (from Euros) and the car was back to normal. A lot cheaper than the coil pack and for your car they are far more expensive. It will cost you over £200 for the complete set than £47 for the spark plugs!

Here is a photo of my spark plugs from my Mk3 Avensis I got last September. Notice the staining of the old spark plug compared to the new:

The ones on the Meriva were far worse than the picture above.

Hope you get the car sorted .
