Difficult starting

My 2007 D4D has probems starting when cold. It fires then cuts out repeatedly sometimes requiring 5-6 attempts before finally running. I have changed glow plugs (one failed), fuel filter, air filter and cleaned the egr valve but nothing has made any difference. It went back for the head gasket recall a couple of years back and is not using water so don't think that is the issue. No fault codes are showing on my reader.

Don't really know what to try next. Can anyone help?

I would put money on it being your scv valve. I had the same issues with mine. There is a huge topic on this in the forum. It requires an updated valve and software to the ecu.

Thanks for that. Is this a main dealer only fix or something i can do myself?

Actually you could probably buy the scv valve and fit it yourself no problem as it's only held in by 2 bolts... But the Ecu update is a dealer job..

The new valve will not work properly without the updated software..

Ok so i am struggling to find the correct part. Reading the past posts it appears that i need part number 04226-26020 which searching on google shows the part expected but i cannot seem to find anyone selling it. Searching on e-bay under that part number i get results for 04226-0L020 which lists as for Corrolla and Avensis with the D4D engine. Does anybody know if this would fit and work with a software update from the main stealer?

04426-26020 is correct, the other part number 04226-0L020 is listed for the 2.5/3.0 KD engines in Hilix/Landcruiser/Hiace

Thanks for that. Does anyone know where i can get one as i am having no luck finding one for sale. To cap it all i have spoken to my local Toyota Dealer (Listers, Boston) regarding the software update and initially they claimed to know nothing about it and stated that they had never supplied one of these valves. When the parts person eventually went to speak to a technician he stated that they had fitted a number of these and i needed the software update first. He also said that the valve had been replaced again by part number 04226-26030 and prompltly quoted me £265 + vat to supply it and a further £70 + vat for the software update. Again  a google search shows this valve but nowhere to buy it. I have got the car starting again by cleaning the old valve with brake cleaner but know this is likely to be a temporary fix and want to get this sorted properly. I have found on e-bay part number 294200-0300 which appears to correspond with the old type of valve. As this is only £83 delivered i am now considering fitting one of these to replace the old one on the basis that the original valve has lasted 8 years before failing and at that rate i could own the car for a lot of years and replace a number of valves before the cost of a Toyota mortgage for the updated valve. I also wouldn't then need a software update at stealer prices.

Please can anyone point me in the direction of the right valve at a sensible price?

Well if you ever get to the bottom of this be sure to let me know as i have same issue on 08 2.0 D4D.  Toyota specialist said it is not likely to be SCV but from what ive read on symptoms it sounds like the culprit but expensive.

I too was told it isn't likely to be the valve. But I said I wanted it changed a anyway. I gave them the part number of valve and the SB number.

It's like they don't like being told what the problem is and/or the fix from a non Toyota staff member.... Well it seemed like that at my dealership.....

Hope you get it sorted....

Ok so i have finally got to the bottom of this. I was able to swop out the original type valve with a known good one from a friends car. This did not cure the problem. I dont know if this is because it needs coding to the vehicle or some other reason but either way it didn't work. I eventually had to bite the bullet and book it into the main stealers to have the new valve fitted and the software updated. Despite me telling them exactly what the problem was and what i wanted doing they wouldn't accept that there was an issue with the valves and even denied that there was an updated part and software update to cure this. Thanks to the info on this site i was able to set them right and finally got them to take the car in. After having it for 24 hours they rang me and stated that they had diagnosed a faulty suction control valve which would need replacing with an updated part and i would need a software update. (No sh#t sherlock). Anyway after a further 24 hours they rang to say it was ready for collection and presented me with a bill for £750 + vat. Now this really is taking the p*ss. Having explained to them that i had rung the parts department the week before and been quoted 265+vat for the valve and 95+vat for the software update and its only booked as 1.1 hours service time (thanks to the info on this site) there was no way on this earth that i was going to pay 750 + osbournes share. Having asked how they justified the extra they said that it was the time taken for diagnosing the fault which amounted to several hours ramp time. To cut a long story short i had a very heated discussion with the service manager and threatened to report them to both Toyota and trading standards. Eventually they agreed that the diagnostics undertaken by them was unecessary as i had already carried out and eliminated all other faults prior to sending the car to them and had to point out to them the TSB from Toyota regarding the SCV update. The bill was substantially reduced to reflect this.

The car now appears to start better when cold but i have only had to use it a couple of times since the work was undertaken so i will report back on the longer term resolution to this.
