I should start off by saying so far I love my Avensis, but its my first diesel and first Toyota (06 plate).

It has FSH and 88000 on the clock (paid 2300 which has broke me :( ).

Does this video all sound normal?

There is some rattle at low revs when pulling away and also a metallic noise at low revs mostly at standstill.

Injectors and DMF? Please say not! And if so can I just leave them for a while??

I have £0 to spend for a couple of months so kind of am stuck. (And yes I have the engine covers etc!)

Did engine stall after the last rev/loft off, or did you switch off straight away? Not a good idea to switch off after revving, as you should let the turbo cool a little.

Cannot say much about the metallic noises.

I switched off but thanks for the comment, will try let it cool a little first.

Do all lights look OK and engine sound OK.

Complete diesel noob here and this is the most I have spent on a car.

Seeing the repair prices quoted on here for dmf's and head gaskets etc has scared the life out of me!!!

I am also a Newbie to Diesels and Toyota, Early this year my X5 needed some open heart surgery the loan car they gave me was very nice 3 series Coup'e, looked good on the drive but not practical for our dogs.

So I brought a Toyota Avensis 2.2 D4D estate (55 Plate) with 180k on the clock very very cheap, yes it had a a few issues the main one the heater (I didn't know about the head gasket thing then, I guess that was why it was so cheap)  but with some pointers from here and good old Google that is fixed. Left to do is a gearbox mount some suspension bushes wouldn't go amiss but these are all things that myself and my 2 sons can do as and when the weather permits. Yes it sounds like a Taxi (well it was once) but at motorway speeds I was pleasantly surprised at how quiet it is and that wind and tyre noise are the main sounds.

The engine sounds just like yours it goes really well uses little fuel doesn't leak or drip anything on the driveway and is comfortable and roomy add to that it's cheap to insure and tax and I think it's the bargain of the year. My sons, daughter and her other half now have a car at their disposal when they visit (it was always mixed emotions when they disappeared in my X5) plus plenty of room in the boot for the dogs. It has covered 4.5k in 2 months without a murmur, so we will give it an oil service this weekend.

A bit of a long winded way of saying, looking at your video when your car starts all the lights go out I assume everything works as it should inside and it doesn't loose any oil/water so stop listening for scary noises drive it and enjoy it.

Thanks for the replies! I am pretty sure I have located the Metal noise, sounds like from or behind the Turbo. Only happens on acceleration or deceleration at 1500 revs - 2000 revs. Happens whilst driving or at standstill. No smoke. No judders or anything like that. Anyone have any more ideas or should I just drive it as said above!!!

sounds more like a rattle, something loose & vibrating?

Check the heat shields on the exhaust a loose one will give a rattle like that. Had a similar noise on my wife's Subaru. The dealer wanted silly money for replacement £2.50 at Halfords for some penny washers job done. The original fixings had rusted and pulled through I got mole grips on the heads and managed to remove them 4 m6 bolts out of my tool box and penny washers job done and no more rattle

Big pool of coolant on the floor yesterday morning :( :(

Breakdown said its back of engine bay and possible heater matrix hose. I hope thats it but again fear the worst. Buy a Toyota because you think of quality and I have never worried so much!

Hopefully it's an easy & cheap job but at the end of the day you must be realistic - you have bought a 10 year old car & modern, mass market cars (even the likes of Mercedes) are not designed to last for ever. At that age you have to expect that some things may start to go.

Oh I understand things go but reading about the HG failures and injector problems are worrying.

Lets hope it is an easy fix. I have no smoke, no wet carpets or anything like that, either way its booked in at a garage Monday.

This is the sight I woke upto under the car............ Lets hope I havent been done by the seller!
