Is this normal for a verso 1.6D????

Hi everyone

We are 6 months into the ownership of a 2015 Verso 1.6D Excel purchased new from a main dealer.

In principal, the car is good. We came from a Corolla Verso and liked the durability/versatility of the space. The infotainment is pretty good (slow in places but nothing to cause us real problems).

The big issues however we have are the fuel consumption and the sluggishness at low revs. The mpg has always been rubbish. We went for the diesel engine for the power when fully laden with kids, camping gear etc etc. No one expects to get the quoted figures but we are constantly getting low 30s mpg round town. Mix in some longer trips and we might get closer to 40. I took the car back to the dealership and was told there were no issues identified.

The sluggishness at low revs is the other big irritation. Re-visiting the reviews, people talk of great pick up at low revs. This is not our experience though. Cruise up to a roundabout with nothing coming in second gear and it is like the world slows down - put your foot down and wait an age for the car to pick up. Not what you want when driving round town. The number of times you need to jam it into first to get it going is really annoying.

So - are we the only ones? Is this the experience of others or do we need to push Toyota harder to look at the car? Would love any feedback.

Thanks in advance

****, that's pretty bad mpg for a diesel... either there is something wrong or that BMW 1.6D really isn't all they made it out to be...

My dad has an old 2.0 D4D Corolla Verso and his mpgs are in the low-mid 50's!

I've only seen a few people with the new 1.6D engine on here, but it's mostly been in smaller lighter cars than the Verso so I don't know how normal the performance of yours is...

If you are just doing short stop/start trips around town with the engine never given a chance to fully warm up then I suspect that low 30s is where it should be especially over winter with colder ambient.

Hi Dave, I've also had a 2015 Verso 1.6 D-4D for 5 months, and although we must have busier roundabouts in Hampshire than yours in Dorset ... hardly ever get chance to "cruise up in second gear with nothing coming" :-) I haven't found a lack of torque to pick up momentum.

I've just returned from a 1,000+ mile trip, really heavily laden, and in mixed town, rural & motorway driving (80 mph - France) averaged almost exactly 50 mpg for the whole trip. I actually found the lower economy was achieved on motorways - but nearer 55 mpg at UK motorway cruising speeds.

I agree with comments that economy is lower from cold starts, and on short journeys, but I think that even allowing for this you might be expecting 40 - 45 mpg even in urban driving, rather than in the 30s, so I would consider a further word with your dealer, saying that your experience doesn't seem to match either the economy or the engine torque reported by others - good luck.

Go for a test drive in another Toyota fitted with the same engine and compare.  I've not driven one but I'd expect it to be a perky engine.

Hi everyone

Thanks for the great responses - really helpful! I have contacted our dealer to arrange a test drive and see where I go from there.

Thanks!

Dave

It all depends how cold & how long e.g. yesterday morning (8am) from overnight on a 4 mile urban journey my car averaged ~30mpg according to the trip computer (& would have been less if I had only been going e.g. 1.5 miles). On the other hand a 40 mile mixed motoring (but largely dual cariageway/motorway) drive in the afternoon had it return 57mpg.

Agreed, but your 2.2 D-4D is a less fuel efficient engine than the 1 6 D-4D for which the OP is asking feedback, even on very short runs from cold I certainly expect to get 40 mpg

A big engine working well within its capacity will usually work out more economical than a small engine that needs pushed hard.

Yes, it's an older, less efficient engine from a series that is notoriously slow to warm up but on very short runs from very cold any diesel  will give (relatively) appalling mileage until it warms up.

Let your car sit overnight, get in early in the morning & zero the average mpg & note the ambient, start it, drive it for 1 mile & tell me what the average mpg says & the ambient temp.

In my case as I live fairly down-town in a city that would also include a no. of stop/starts due to street intersections & traffic lights which obviously doesn't help. Also, being somewhat more northerly overnight ambient here may well be 5C less than down there.

Having said that, HJ's RealMPG suggests ~62 for a 1.6D Verso so if the OP doesn't have an abnormal driving style/route then there may be an issue & in that case a test drive in another over similar routes as a comparison is valid (just make sure that it's either a cold start or that one is aware that it isn't & the potential difference).

I didn't realise that pottering about town required the engine to be "pushed hard" - perhaps my driving style is less aggressive :-)

Hi all,

I'm having the same issue with my 2015 1.6d verso. I average about 37-40 mpg on mainly motorway driving. I've had it back to my dealer who said there is nothing wrong, I'm currently waiting a response from Toyota Ireland after submitting fuel receipts. I'll keep updated with any developments I have.

Hi Mick,

I certainly see better fuel economy than that. However I have noticed that the economy drops (from 50-55mpg) quite significantly at speeds over 70 mph (UK motorway limit).

I think your speed limits in Ireland may be higher (120 kph = 75mph ?) and if you routinely drive at 130kph (as I do in France) then I would expect my fuel economy to register around 44-45 mpg. Keep us informed :-)
