Isn't this already known? They even demonstrated it on a Top Gear episode IIRC!

The use of a signal relay is quite clever tho'...

Back in 2013 academics from the University of Birmingham and a Dutch university wanted to publish a paper highlighting similar weaknesses, but were prevented from publishing after Volkswagen won a high court injunction. The paper was published in August 2015.

Think this is the first published test by a motoring organisation (ADAC).

Still, good that it's being highlighted; It's kinda irresponsible that carmakers are still touting these things when they're so vulnerable.
Thankfully it's not too widespread I think, but there was that incident not that long ago where thieves were jamming peoples remote-locking fobs when they parked and they'd walk off leaving their cars unlocked!

The expression "Not fit for purpose" comes to mind.

The problem is it's all broadcast radio waves, and there's not a lot you can do to shield it and still make it work. The big flaw in all these systems is there is no proximity check in most of them or the proximity check is too lenient; If the systems would only ping the fob to make sure it's *inside* the car before authorizing a start this wouldn't be a problem, but many of them don't, or the error margin for 'inside' extends to like, 20m outside the car!
