Got me Prius!

(Continuation from:  http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/topic/172384-buying-a-gen3-questions/)

So far so good!   Done 200 miles in a couple of days and achieved 67mpg.  Which I was quite surprised by!!  I usually take official figures and take off 30%.  Living out in country helps I think, gives the car a nice long run.   Driving pretty sedately though, so will have to try a swifter trip and see how it gets on.

Kinda miss a built in satnav.  Will have to sort a phone cradle out I guess.  Shame it doesnt support bluetooth audio too

Parking sensors weren’t working, but found the switch in the boot so that’s resolved.

Have an issue with the front left Speakers to.  Essentially no sound, or very heavily muffled.  Guess I need to pop the Speakers out and check the connections are all in place, then perhaps the back of stereo too.  Hoping it is just a loose connection!    The other 3 corners are all ok.  So it’s a bit odd.

In general it’s a little hedged scratched and has various swirl marks etc, so needs a decent clean, polish and wax.

As mentioned previously, all 4 tyres are different.  3 of them I’ve never heard of the brand…   decent tread though, so annoyingly changing them will probably come later.   But hopefully related to the tyres I noticed a throbbing type sound when on very smooth roads coasting at 20-30mph.  Hopefully it’s not a bearing or some such, I think tyres could be likely due to the randomness.

Oh, and manual lights are annoying!   haha

Primarily however, it’s a full service to start with.  Car has done 60k.

Planning to swap the sparkplugs, oil and filter, cabin filter, air filter, brake fluid.  Book says engine coolant and inverter coolant are good for 100k and 150k respectively, so will leave those for now.

Book also says check the ‘Charcoal Canister’….    Wtf is that?

Saw a few Sparkplug videos and it looks like you have to remove the wiper arms.  Perhaps it’s the angle of the camera, but that doesn’t seem necessary?!   Will have to have a prod.  Doesn’t look to bad in any case.

Other things on the list…   Would like to add a tint to rear glass.  Headlight plastic could do with a polish.  And I’m half tempted to spray the wheels dark grey/black….

If you are getting 67 mpg, then the tyres can't be too bad.

These are (or at least should be) Iridium spark plugs and the book says they can wait to be changed at 120,000 mi, so you can put that off too.

MrT who looks after my gen3 prius does a spark plug change every 60k miles.

The charcoal filter is likely to be the cabin filter behind the glove box.  Easy to source and change yourself.  Non-carbon versions are available which are even cheaper.

As far as I'm aware the charcoal canister is something to do with fuel vapour, not the air conditioning/cabin filter.

Seems to be a an inspection item rather than replace too....   Only thing i found with a very quick google was something about flooding it when filling up too fast...  so yeah, possibly related to vapors escaping the tank maybe??

Checked the Air and Cabin filters.   The Air is a toyota part...  Last serviced by toyota in 2012, so assume its 4 years old.  Cabin filter had half a tree in it and the lid wasnt connected so it was half hanging out.

New parts on their way.

Correct, part of the emissions system, and normally a lifetime part which shouldn't need replacing.
