Unfortunately, the UK version will be grey, or there may possibly be a choice of other drab colours.

Where have you read there are no other colour choices?

I believe that he's being cynical based on Toyota GB's previous choices of colours (I agree, they do tend to veer towards very safe rather than exciting) - a smiley probably wouldn't have gone amiss to indicate that.

Interesting snippet from PiP Gen 4

Solar roof charging panels

Solar panels on the roof charge the Battery when the sun shines and a gas injection heat pump system keeps the air conditioning working when the car is being driven in battery-only mode

There is also a larger, 8.8kWh lithium ion Battery that, despite its extra capacity, takes just two hours and 20 minutes to charge. Toyota avoids quoting a kerb weight for its new model, but insists this has been “kept to a minimum”.

My apologies, I thought my cynicism was clear enough. I've now added a suitable smiley to the original.

I looked at the plugin a while ago, thinking that it might be a good buy before the £5000 grant went, and with a price drop before the new model arrived. Sadly, there were only five colours in the brochure; drab white, white, silver, drab blue and drab grey (my descriptions). SWMBO effectively said over her dead body.

In the same vein, the new version will probably have 15" wheels (drab design ) only, the same as the current plugin.

Why is it that Japan won't share that lime green, or the emotional red, which looks a whole lot better that the red I've ordered (bright name, average colour) as the best of a mediocre collection. OK I'm happy that many people don't want bright coloured cars, but some of us do. Or has Toyota decided that anyone who wants an efficient car must have no brightness in their life.

Toyota GB aren't the only manufacturer to offer a limited range of colours, and delete the brighter ones. For our second car, we had, until last year, a 2012 Hyundai i20 in a nice to us, bright, solid red. The new i20 that was introduced last year has only one solid colour (white), and other metallics ranging from silver, grey, red, blue and brown. We went for a metallic silver.

Presumably by having only one solid colour, most people go for the extra cost metallics, pearlescents, etc. Another £500 or so please.

Unfortunately, although the metallics are an extra £400, the new pearlescent ones are now an extra £650.

... which is why I said '£500 or so'....

So if you purchased a base colour prius (no extra charge) , how much extra would it be to have it resprayed in a colour of your choice?

In these days of computer controlled everything, changing colours in the paint shop is simply a matter of pressing the right button - or clicking a mouse button.

Yes, they have to have paint on hand, but if you look at the range of colours across the whole Toyota range, it can't be too difficult to offer an existing colour which they offer for any of their cars.

I know it is a diffrent beast and considerably more expensive, but if you look at the on-line configurator for the new Audi Q7 you are offered an amazing range of exterior colours (yes, I know there is an extra charge, but it is clearly an achievable practice).

In theory it probably could be done on a special order basis but then you are looking at extending delivery times  which may result in losing sales (e.g. Bratislava is a lot nearer than Japan so ex-factory delivery once built is months quicker).

Not sure the Q7 is a good comparison as it's a different market sector & 2x the price of the Prius so an extra £2200 for a special paint is a smaller % of the price than it would be on a Prius. It would be interesting to know what % of Q7 buyers opt for a "special" paint though.
