Currently looking to change to a lexus 220d but the guys on the lexus owners forum said to stay clear of the diesel and go down the petrol route.my question is are all the 2.2 diesel engines have hg problems. (Same engine as the avensis)

The car I'm looking at has 104 k on it!

By no means do all the 2ad engines have head gasket issues. Some on this forum have estimated the failure rate at a few percent. I don't know the real figure but if you are at all nervous or unsure I'd follow their advice. Engines built after February 2008 I think don't have the issue as it was addressed in manufacturing. If you read up on the signs to spot on this forum you'll at least be able to avoid one that definitely has failed.

The build date of affected engines varies from model to model - see first post of

Don't know the build period of affected engines in the Lexus.

Thanks guys..I'm either going to stick with my 06 avensis 2.0 d4d 1cd.engine or if and a big if I change I'll go the petrol route.road tax a bit higher.but I could live with that.

Iirc the version in the Lexus IS is the 177bhp version which seems to have the highest likelihood of failure (it appears to increase with power). As Frosty says it varies by model but the TSB covers AD engines in the Auris for production up until September 2009.

Yes heidfirst was just reading that.the 147 bhp seems to be the way to go.but again thinking petrol now less hassle and cheaper to run.

Just my luck was told yesterday my head gasket has gone to will cost £1700 to fix.

My car is from june 2008, if i was to go ahead with repairs would this problem be solved for good ?

Thats what the tech told me but im thinking its been several years for this known problem maybe it will be ?

Unless you have been really, really unlucky the gasket failing is the result of other issues. Unless those are resolved (indeed even then) nobody can guarantee that just replacing the gasket will fix it for good. Also, there possibly may be damage to the block/head that you won't know until it is stripped.

Toyota's goodwill fix was basically an exchange engine with modified parts minus ancillaries - something like £5k worth of work.

P.S. do you need to update your profile?

I maybe am one of the unlucky ones, my mechanic says he will send it off to be skimmed the whole process taking about a week and costing £1700.

The mechanic also said that once its done thats it, will not happen again, how true this is i have no idea.

My profile dores need changing to lol never realised that lol.

the head gasket going on these engines is a symptom, it's not the underlying problem. unless he addresses that I don't see how he can say that it won't happen again.

I read somewhere on here its normally because of build up of carbon which causes this, if i had an egr delete would this solve that ??

Sorry my mechanical knowledge is very limited but im gonna go and see my mechanic and ask what work will be carried out all together
