Now the big question,Regarding the handbrake on Avensis[EPB]      Whats the general opinion .... Would you carry on with ownership AFTER the 5 Yr warrantee.[if problems occur the bill is MEGA ]  I like to keep my cars for 10 yrs so I might have a problem...or is there anything that can be done or have there been any mods to stop water ingress and more importantly can I get them through Mr T.    My car is a 2012 TOURER 1-8 Manual purchased new .Thanks for any input.

Think I would buy a Toyota extended warranty - especially if I could take advantage of the recent 2 years for the price of 1 offer. It would tie one into having the car serviced by Toyota, though.

I believe that there was some revision to the actuator either pre or for the facelift. However, I availed myself of the "2 for 1" offer on the extended warranty as I too intend to run this car until it is at least 7.

The extended warranty also includes Toyota Roadside Assistance (normally ~£72 on it's own) so if you deduct that from the cost it makes the warranty ~ £200 per annum for peace of mind ( the low mileage option on the extended warranty is suitable for my use).

The damage to the EHB was caused by water ingress from parking brake release Bowden cable into the brake actuator electronics and shorting out components.

Toyota redesign the Bowden cable assembly that runs from the boot to the brake actuator, with a hermetically sealed replacement cable assembly, but I'm not sure when it was introduced, maybe they introduced it on the  2012 updated model. You'll have to check if yours has the modified cable, for piece of mind.

If you have to manually release the handbrake,  the seal in the boot has to be replaced, otherwise it will allow moisture to penetrate the actuator and lead to failure of the unit, as previously mentioned.

I have emailed Surrey Electronics, asking if the updated Bowden cable or seals can be retro fitted to older systems, as a preventative measure.

If it is possible, I would consider having it done.

Update, I got a response email with the statement that they only deal with electronic radio equipment! I sent the email using the address from the Toyota Avensis: -

http://www.surreyelectronics.com/leaflets/TOYOTA%20AVENSIS%20ELECTRONIC%20PARKING%20BRAKE%20SYSTEM.pdf

Considering that members have used them, I can only assume one of the following - There is a different Surrey Electronics, A different department of the same deals with EPB, or they have ceased dealing with automotive electronics. The last could have been under instruction from Toyota themselves, but I would have thought that any car would have already been out of warranty!

I replied to this response linking their web pages.

Any member who recently dealt with the company, please confirm they exist.
