Ridiculous Tyre Fitting Price

Has anyone else had the madness that is having to buy new tyres for their Rav that has 235\55 R18 99H fitted.

No independent tyre shop has the correct machine to do the job so it has to go to MrT to be done and they charge 1 hour per tyre to fit. On top of that my local dealer also does not have the machine either so I am told I have to go on a 140 mile trip to my nearest dealer with a machine.

Tyre £139

Fitting £99

Fuel £20-£30?

And I need 2 tyres now and 2 in around 6 months.

I am not a happy Raver.

Apparently it's all about the run flat system fitted to the 99H tyre. If you have the 100H then anyone can change them.

Tell me your experiences.

Run flats have been the subject of several threads previously. Toyota dealers won't replace the run flats with standard tyres as the cars were Type Approved with them.

I understand the type approve thing Frosty and I'm quite prepared to pay the price of the tyres, I'm just angry about paying £99 per tyre for fitting and travel to another county for the privilege.

I've now got Toyota UK on the case. They usually come up with a sensible compromise or solution for any issues I've had in the past.

From the previous threads, people have had the run flats removed by independents, etc. But having done this they should inform their insurance companies of the modifications, etc.

Do you just need the machine to put the tyres on then? I've been told that there is no way of getting the run flats off or on without the machine.

The following seems to be one of the main threads regarding run flats -

A great write up! Thanks for the link Frosty. I did do a forum search and looked through the 'how to's' before I posted the new topic but managed to miss this.

If your profile is correct and you only have the 13 plate Rav4 then although you have the same size tyres as the 2006-2009 T/SR180 Rav4 which had the Bridgestone Runflat band fitted, you DO NOT have the Bridgestone runflat band system that requires specialist equipment to fit your tyres are perfectly normal and require no special skills/equipment to fit. the only difference between the 99h and 100h is the load rating of the tyre.

Hi Devon,

You have added a little light to my weekend. You are the only person that has said this though. Although I'm not in any kind of position to doubt or question your knowledge, I've spoken to three different dealers and not one have said what you have said.

Having said that I've never given them my registration, I've only asked if the are able to change tyres of this size and I suppose they've immediately assumed that I have the run flat system.

If they are not run flat this would explain why I have a spare as well then yes?

Thanks,

Bod.

Top bloke Devon. You where right we do not have the run flats as you said. We just happen to have the same size and load rating as the run flats and when tyre shops put it in their computers it tells them that they are them and that only a dealer can to the job. Then you rely on your service guy knowing his stuff and putting you right.

The service man that we always deal with was on a day off when we went in and we saw a lady who clearly didn't know what she was dealing with and left us with no end of stress for the weekend until you put your post up. We then went direct to the workshop foreman who confirmed your post.

Thanks again.

Bod
