According to the model history in the Honest John review of the 2009-2015 Avensis, the 2.2 was used for cars with manual transmission, and the 2.2 DCAT was used on cars with automatic transmission -

Thanks never realised that lol

Another thing does anyone have a rough idea what sort of mpg a 1.8 petrol v matic gives around town, actual real life figures and not what toyota claim ???

Also i have never owned a petrol avensis but what are the most comman problems with petrols and can a petrol engine give as many miles overall as a diesel with correct maintenance ?? Like upto 200k plus ?

Im a bit put off with diesels more things to go wrong like turbos, dpfs, egr's etc

Many thanks

are you looking at manual or auto transmission? Tourer or saloon?

The 1.8 Valvematic seems to be very reliable but I don't know what sort of mileage it can ultimately run to.

Thing is that a modern common rail turbo-diesel isn't likely to reach 200k without issues either - as you say, DPF, injectors, DMF etc. They aren't simple, bulletproof engines like older diesels.

The mpg is going to vary according to exactly how you drive & the type of driving but it may well match or actually beat your T180.

I am showing 36 mpg in my Tourer doing local driving which includes hills and some traffic.

I say the Valvematic engine is okay in most situations but if you really need power, you have to rev it a little. Less torque than the diesel at a high revs.

Engine wise, the Valvematic seems to be reliable. I check the oil regularly, and have not need to top up at all. The engine is a variant of the one used in the hybrids.

Spark plugs use an even smaller socket size 14mm, but they are not expensive if you get them from a Toyota eBay retailer, at under £27 delivered.

I think the Multimode CVT may be better and you need to test drive all the engines/transmissions to get a fair impression.
