Maxiscan OBD2 reader

I bought a Maxiscan OBD2 reader last year but it would not work on my car, which is an Avensis SR 2003. I suspect it's a 2002 model as it is registered in January 03. Does anyone know of a fault reader which will work on this model year? ( I know the fault reader was OK as I tested it on a neighbour's later model Vauxhall) Thanks

Hi, Try the Icarsoft website they seem to do vehicle specific and universal scanners. Hope this maybe helps you out

Thanks Mark. I had a look at this site and the price is £84.95, which is a lot more than I want to spend. I don't know if it will work on my car as the last one I bought said it was suitable. I need to be sure before I waste any more money.

I've got this one which works with my 58 Avensis. The listing confirms that it will work for your vehicle.

Not sure why the Maxiscan lists for 2003+ vehicles on eBay

Gary and frank. Thanks for both of those suggestions. I'm not very computer savvy, is the techstream module easy to use?

Thanks

I bought a Techstream kit from eBay but found out it was not official and did not support my car. When I downloaded the EU version and tried to use it, I was locked out and want me pay! That's when i decide to buy expensive but very flexible Launch Creader Viii. You get free updates for life, and works every feature I need for my car. I have used it on different cars with great success.

Now going back to the Techstream, I would like to know more about the "cheaper dealer" version, as I would not advise anyone to buy from eBay, unless somebody else can say that the seller is safe! So I have a good cable. When it did work, I could see the functions and if I had the correct version it would be great.

Took me 15mins to set it up/load it to pc...I've mine a few years now.still use it never any problems with it.i bought both my Peugeot planet and Toyota techstream from a eBay seller from China. Also there's a dearer Toyota 1 with dealer updates/ecu update.but I wouldn't of tried anything like them didn't want to brick my ecu.ive been on a site called MHH I think? And downloaded newer version of the software for them.but your call mines worked and for £13. Not saying all will though software is available on the net just have to look .Plus the official techstream would cost thousands.

I'm an old fella and it sounds a bit beyond me, computerwise. I'm also on a budget so I can't afford to waste money. My only real problem with the car, at the moment, is an intermittent fault which caused it to fail the MOT last year and it's almost time again. The guy who has done a few jobs on my car put a new wheel sensor on last year but it hasn't stopped the VSC/ABS light from staying on sometimes and that's now an MOT failure. H

e said he was going to fix it but is now avoiding my calls! I just want to see if I can find out what's really causing the fault before I take it in again next month.

Not too sure about the hand held type of diagnostic tool that the others have said on here.but I don't know if they will find the root/source of your problem Pete. But it might turn your light off (if that's what you need).hope you get it sorted and good luck with mot.

Thanks Frank. I emailed the eBay seller about the one Gary suggested. They say it will NOT fit my car. Even though they say it fits vehicles after'96. I was hoping someone on here would have an older car like mine and know which one works. As you can see from the pic, it's the old shape, I think it changed in the year my car was registered. I think I'll have to look out for old Avensis owners when I'm at the supermarket and see if they have a scanner I could try.

This thread had a similar discussion - maybe one of these may work?

Thanks Gary. I was actually looking at that one earlier today, so I have ordered one. I also received a message from the eBay seller you quoted. They said the laptop type would work with my car so here's hoping. I'll update this thread when I receive it.

Well, I got one of those ELM327s off eBay but there were no instructions with it so I inserted the mini disc that came with it. It downloaded SOMETHING but it only took a few seconds so I gather it wasn't the whole programme. Anyway, whatever it was, I couldn't get it to open on my laptop. So I tried plugging the reader into the car and plugging the other end into the laptop. All it did was make the engine check light come on (and stay on) and make the other orange lights flash. HELP! Has anyone got any instructions or know how I can download a proper programme for it? Thanks

UPDATE.I found some instructions online, which say "install software package of your choice" Then it gives 2 examples. I downloaded one of them. EasyOBD-II. But it's only the free version. I still don't know what the mini disc was for though. I will try plugging into the car again tomorrow and open the free version I just downloaded. I still don't know what I'm doing though!

The mini disc is probably the drivers for your laptop/elm device.
